Max Verstappen topped first practice at Sepang International Circuit on Friday, 2 October 2026, with a lap of 1:37.520 for Red Bull Racing. George Russell was second, 0.383 seconds back, and Verstappen’s teammate Isack Hadjar placed third, 0.783 seconds off the pace. This was an FP1 result—not a qualifying or race classification.
FP1 result: Verstappen sets the pace
The FIA’s 2026 session classification lists Verstappen first in 1:37.520. Russell, driving for Mercedes, was 0.383 seconds behind, while Red Bull’s Hadjar was 0.783 seconds behind Verstappen.

These figures are the official FP1 times and gaps reported by the FIA’s 2026 classification.
How the session unfolded
FP1 was scheduled to start at 12:30 local time at the 5.5 km Sepang circuit. The FIA described conditions as hot and humid. Formula 1’s session account says Verstappen first moved to the top around the 15-minute mark. Hadjar then briefly led after drivers switched to soft tyres; Russell took the lead before Verstappen set the session’s eventual fastest lap.

Tyre choices varied
Most drivers began on medium tyres, while Verstappen, Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto were among those starting on softs. More drivers used soft tyres as the session progressed, while Russell and Kimi Antonelli later returned to mediums. Because the field’s tyre choices and run timing differed, the final practice order is an early benchmark, not a definitive measure of the weekend’s competitive order.
Other team details
Formula 1 reported that Mercedes brought an upgrade for the event and that McLaren used different rear-wing configurations on Oscar Piastri’s and Lando Norris’s cars. Those are reported setup details; they do not by themselves establish why any driver was faster in FP1.

Why the event is called the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia
The official event listing names the 2–4 October 2026 weekend the “Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia” and places it at Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur. That title should not be confused with the former Malaysian Grand Prix branding: the 2017 archive identifies that event as the Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix.
Formula 1 says this is the first F1 event at Sepang since 2017—a nine-year interval. The venue is in Malaysia; the official 2026 event name is Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The Formula 1 event page lists the circuit and weekend dates.

What this result does—and does not—tell us
Verstappen has the fastest recorded lap of the opening practice session, with Russell and Hadjar closest among the first three. FP1 establishes only that session’s order. It does not decide qualifying or the race, and the differing tyre programs and evolving track activity make it premature to treat the standings as a settled hierarchy. The official Formula 1 session report provides the session narrative and tyre context.
