Morris “Mo” Tooker as its next CEO. The appointment is scheduled to take effect March 1, 2027; until then, Christopher Swift remains CEO. Swift is scheduled to become executive chair on the same date.
When will Mo Tooker become CEO of The Hartford?
The Hartford announced the succession plan on September 30, 2026. Tooker’s CEO appointment is scheduled for March 1, 2027, so it is an announced future change, not a completed transition. The company also said Tooker is scheduled to join its board effective October 1, 2026. The Hartford’s succession announcement
What will Christopher Swift do after stepping down as CEO?
On March 1, 2027, Swift is scheduled to become executive chair. The Hartford says he will lead the board, help guide and oversee corporate strategy, and advise the CEO. Swift intends to step down from the executive-chair role in the second half of 2027. These are the company’s announced plans; the role changes had not yet taken effect as of the announcement.
Who is Mo Tooker?
Tooker joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer and has since held roles of increasing responsibility. He became company president effective February 1, 2025. In that role, Personal Lines was added to his oversight of Small Commercial, Middle and Large Commercial, Global Specialty, Enterprise Sales & Distribution, and Risk Services; the company said this placed all of its property-and-casualty businesses under his leadership. Those are the company’s descriptions of his work, rather than independent assessments. The company biography says he has more than three decades of insurance and reinsurance experience. Before joining The Hartford, he was president of General Reinsurance Corporation and spent 12 years working internationally from the United Kingdom. He holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and environmental studies from Middlebury College. The Hartford’s official biography of Tooker
What The Hartford says about Swift’s tenure
The Hartford described Swift’s time as CEO as nearly 13 years, including more than 12 years as chairman, and said he led a transformation toward a more focused and disciplined insurer. In its September 30, 2026 announcement, the company said net income return on equity more than tripled and its share price increased more than eightfold during his tenure. These are company-reported comparisons, not independently verified figures in the announcement. The Hartford’s biography says Swift became CEO in 2014 and cites acquisitions and the exit from its run-off life and annuity business among the elements of his tenure. Why the transition matters
Tooker has been company president since February 2025 and has overseen the insurer’s property-and-casualty businesses. The announced timetable therefore puts a leader with broad existing operating responsibilities in the CEO role, while Swift is planned to remain involved as executive chair during the initial handover. The Hartford’s lead independent director, Trevor Fetter, said the plan was intended to preserve “strategic continuity, business momentum and operational strength.” That is the board’s stated rationale, not a guarantee of results.
