Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 17 saves in Buffalo’s 6-3 season-opening loss to Columbus on October 1, 2026. It was an uneven first result, but one game—especially after a preseason injury concern—does not establish a season-long slump. The Sabres’ special-teams problems also shaped the loss.
How did Luukkonen play in the season opener?
Luukkonen stopped 17 shots as the Sabres lost 6-3 to the Blue Jackets in Columbus. The NHL recap gives his individual save total; the official game summary lists Columbus with 23 shots as a team, a different figure that should not be confused with Luukkonen’s saves. The NHL’s game recap records the goalie line and result.
Buffalo twice pulled within one goal, but Columbus pulled away. That makes the opener a disappointing outcome for Luukkonen and the team, not by itself proof that the goaltender has carried a problem into the new season.
Why the loss cannot be pinned on the goalie alone
Buffalo went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Columbus scored twice with the man advantage. Coach Lindy Ruff said, “It was a night where special teams was a difference maker.” That is relevant team context, though it does not establish that special teams or any particular defensive breakdown caused an individual goal.

Forward Zach Benson described the team’s view of the game as “Just a couple of breakdowns,” adding that Buffalo had “83 games left” and was looking forward to playing at home. The Sabres’ account presents an eventful team loss, not a verdict focused solely on Luukkonen. Buffalo’s recap includes the special-teams totals and postgame comments.
What the preseason injury does—and does not—tell us
Luukkonen left Buffalo’s September 26 preseason finale against Pittsburgh at 3:47 of the third period with a lower-body issue. Ruff said, “He tweaked something and we just got him off,” and, “Didn’t want to take any chances.” The team did not provide a recovery timeline at the time. The Sabres’ report from that game describes his exit and Ruff’s comments.

By September 30, Luukkonen had practiced in the starter’s net for two days and was expected to start the opener; he did start in Columbus. The timeline shows he returned to practice and played, but the available reporting does not establish whether the earlier issue affected his performance.
How the opener compares with his recent record
Luukkonen’s 2025-26 regular-season line was 22-9-3, with a 2.52 goals-against average and .910 save percentage across 35 games, according to the NHL’s 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs First Round Media Guide. Buffalo also reported that he posted a .917 save percentage over his final 25 games of that season after a slow start.

| Performance window | Record or save percentage | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2026 opener | 17 saves; Buffalo lost 6-3 | One game, too small a sample to establish a season trend |
| 2025-26 regular season | 22-9-3; 2.52 GAA; .910 save percentage over 35 games | Multi-game prior-season baseline; figures from the NHL’s 2026 First Round Media Guide |
| Final 25 games of 2025-26 | .917 save percentage | A late-season subset reported by Buffalo after an early-season slow start |
The windows are not interchangeable: the opener is one game, the season line covers 35 games, and the .917 figure covers only the final 25. The opener looks rough against the broader context, but the prior-season numbers do not predict how Luukkonen will play next.
