The best fast-food sides do more than fill the space beside a burger: they bring a distinct flavor, memorable texture, or regional character to the meal. This subjective ranking weighs flavor, texture, distinctiveness, meal fit, recognition, and availability context. It is an editorial list—not a verified cross-chain sales chart—and several picks are regional, limited-time, or legacy items rather than options you can order everywhere today.
How this ranking works
There is no objective scoreboard for a side dish that might be judged by crunch, seasoning, nostalgia, or how well it complements a main course. The picks below are ranked by flavor identity, texture, distinctiveness, meal fit, and staying power where that can be established. Availability is labeled by market and status where known; menu lineups can change.
For context, Lovefood’s June 20, 2025 list of 48 sides says its own ranking considered reviews, accolades, popularity, sales, longevity, and reaction at release, while acknowledging that ranking food is subjective. Its published order is useful as one editorial reference, not proof of a universal consensus or independently verified sales standings. The Ringer describes a different approach for its fast-food item list: staff nominated more than 100 items before voting in a general election. This ranking is editorial, not a reader poll.
The 10 best fast-food sides of all time
1. McDonald’s World Famous Fries — United States; current
The benchmark earns the top spot through balance: a crisp exterior, a soft center, salt that makes sense with a burger, and a cut that stays recognizable even when the fries are no longer piping hot. They are familiar rather than surprising, but their versatility is precisely the point: they can anchor a meal or share the spotlight with a sandwich. McDonald’s U.S. says it uses Russet Burbank and Shepody potatoes. Its official page lists 230 calories for a small serving, a product-page figure accessed in 2026; the company cautions that nutrition can vary with formulation, supply, serving size, preparation, region, and season. 2. In-N-Out Animal Style fries — United States; regional/current
Animal Style turns a side into a saucy, savory centerpiece: fries are topped with spread, grilled onions, and cheese. The appeal is contrast—the fries provide a starchy base while the toppings bring tang, richness, and soft onion sweetness. 4. Burger King Have-sies — United States; legacy/availability varies
Have-sies answered a practical fast-food question with a simple compromise: why choose between fries and onion rings when a side can include both? The appeal is variety in one order, with fries’ salty potato comfort beside the sweeter, crunchier ring. That mix gives it a stronger personality than either component alone. 10. Wendy’s chili — United States; current
Chili is the list’s most substantial spoonable side: warm, savory, and a natural match for fries or a burger. It offers a different texture and flavor profile from the fried choices that dominate fast-food sides, which is why it makes the cut. It is less universally compatible with a meal and more filling than a typical side, so it works best when you want something hearty rather than a crisp contrast.
