Managers could challenge eligible calls, while crew chiefs had separate authority to initiate reviews in defined situations. The Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System was not a regular-season 2025 replay option: MLB announced league-wide use beginning in 2026.
How an MLB replay review worked in 2025
An eligible call could reach MLB’s Replay Command Center in New York through a manager challenge or a permitted crew-chief review. Full-time MLB umpires serving as replay officials decided whether to overturn, confirm or let the call stand. They changed a call only when video provided clear and convincing evidence; otherwise, it stood. The replay official’s decision was final.
When a call was overturned, the replay official used discretion to place the teams as they would have been had the call originally been correct. A review covered only the calls included in the manager’s challenge or accepted by the crew chief.
How a manager challenge worked
- Signal promptly: Immediately after a play, the manager signals that the club is considering a challenge.
- Commit within 15 seconds: Once alerted, the umpire starts a 15-second timer. The manager must commit before it expires.
- Specify the review: One challenge may include more than one reviewable call from the same play.
- Keep or lose the challenge: If the replay official overturns any challenged call, the club retains its challenge. If none is overturned, the challenge is charged.
For the precise limits on a particular play, consult MLB’s Manager Challenge glossary.

When a crew chief could initiate review
- Potential home run: A crew chief could initiate a review at any time.
- Other reviewable calls: Beginning in the eighth inning, the crew chief could initiate a review on their own or at the request of a manager with no challenges remaining.
Which calls were reviewable?
MLB replay applied to listed categories, with specific limits inside some of them. The categories in MLB’s replay glossary include:
- Potential home runs and other boundary calls.
- Specified fair-or-foul calls.
- Force plays and tag plays.
- Outfield catch plays.
- Specified baserunning calls: passing a runner, scoring before a third out, and touching a base.
- Hit-by-pitch calls.
- Home-plate collisions and tag-ups.
- Runner placement following a boundary call.
- Interference on double plays.
These categories do not make every related judgment reviewable. For example, certain fair-or-foul calls qualify only when the batted ball first lands at or beyond the first- or third-base umpire’s set position. A hit-by-pitch review does not decide whether the pitch was in the strike zone when it touched the batter or whether the batter tried to avoid being hit. MLB’s Replay Review glossary gives the precise wording and limits.

ABS was separate from ordinary replay in 2025
The ABS Challenge System reviews balls and strikes; it is distinct from replay of eligible game-play calls. Under the format MLB announced for league-wide use beginning in 2026, a pitcher, catcher or batter may immediately challenge a ball-or-strike call. Tracking technology compares the pitch location with a batter-specific strike zone.
MLB’s September 23, 2025 announcement described the zone as 17 inches wide, with its top at 53.5% and bottom at 27% of the batter’s height. The announced 2026 format gives each club two challenges; successful challenges are retained, and a team with none remaining entering an extra inning receives one. These are terms of the announced 2026 system, not ordinary MLB replay rules for the 2025 Championship Season. See MLB’s September 23, 2025 ABS announcement for the rollout details.

What MLB reported from 2025 ABS testing
ABS was tested at MLB Spring Training in 2025 and used in that year’s All-Star Game. MLB reported just over four ABS pitches challenged per game at Spring Training, with success near 50%. Its reported overturn rates were 54% for defensive challenges and 50% for offensive challenges; by challenger, they were 56% for catchers, 50% for hitters and 41% for pitchers. Those figures describe ABS testing, not ordinary replay challenges in the 2025 regular season.

The MLB materials cited here do not establish complete 2025 regular-season and postseason totals for ordinary replay challenge volume, overturn rate or review duration. ABS Spring Training figures should not be used as a substitute: they concern a different system and a limited testing context.
