Jake Oettinger started for the Dallas Stars against the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 2, 2026. St. Louis won 4-0, with Oettinger making 20 saves.
Oettinger was in goal for Dallas’s opener
The Stars opened their 2026-27 regular season at home against St. Louis at American Airlines Center. A game-day report said Oettinger was first off the ice at the morning skate and that a lower-body injury from the preseason had not kept him from being available. That report did not provide a diagnosis or further medical detail: CBS Sports/RotoWire.
Dallas’s initial roster, announced Sept. 28, listed Oettinger and Casey DeSmith as its two goaltenders. The roster alone did not establish a fixed starter hierarchy: Dallas Stars.
St. Louis shut out Dallas, 4-0
Oettinger made 20 saves in the loss. Blues goaltender Joel Hofer made 25 saves. After the game, Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said, “At the end of the day, they got to their game quicker than we did and they stayed with it,” according to the NHL recap published Oct. 3, 2026.

His previous season provides context, not a forecast
In 2025-26, Oettinger went 35-12-6 with a 2.59 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage and four shutouts in 54 regular-season games, according to his Dallas Stars profile. The team described that .899 save percentage as the lowest of his career to that point. Oettinger said, “I don’t feel like I accomplished any of my goals,” in the profile; general manager Jim Nill said Oettinger needed to be “more consistent.”
DeSmith’s 2025-26 regular-season line was 15-8-6, with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage, according to the same team profile. Those dated figures describe the previous season; they do not establish who will start a later game.
