Another OpenAI Safety Departure Adds to a Pattern of Researchers Leaving With Public Warnings

David Robinson, a former OpenAI safety-team transparency lead, says he resigned from the company during the week of October 3, 2026, because its rapid deployment culture falls short of the care he believes increasingly capable AI requires. His account adds to a record of safety-related departures and public criticism—but the people who have left have not all given the same reasons, and their departures alone do not establish that OpenAI has failed to manage AI risks.

Why did David Robinson leave OpenAI?

In an essay published by The Atlantic on October 3, 2026, Robinson described a workplace shaped by “perpetual sprints” and a trial-and-error approach to deployment. He argues that fixing problems as they emerge is not enough when the potential consequences of failures grow with AI capabilities.

Robinson says he spent three and a half years at OpenAI, led the drafting of its current Preparedness Framework, and oversaw safety reports for 12 frontier-model launches. Those details and his account of the company’s culture are his own statements in the essay; they are not an independent audit of OpenAI’s practices.

What warning did he make?

His warning is about organizational practice as well as technical safety: in his view, a company’s pace and incentives affect whether safeguards receive sufficient attention before a system is deployed. Robinson wrote, “But as the company sprints from one launch to the next, it is failing to achieve the level of care that I believe is needed.”

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

He points to safety-control incidents in his essay as examples supporting his concern. The examples and the conclusions he draws from them should be understood as Robinson’s account, not as findings independently established by the reporting described here.

What changes does he propose?

Robinson argues that frontier AI developers should draw more on safety expertise from fields such as aviation, nuclear power, and finance; build in redundancy and careful planning; improve the science used to assess future systems; and face stronger external incentives to prioritize safety. He framed the operational analogy this way: “Given today’s risks, frontier labs need to run like nuclear-power plants or busy airports, with layers of redundancy and careful, time-consuming planning, so that the occasional and inevitable human error does not open a door to disaster.” That is his proposal, not a regulator’s finding about how AI companies are required to operate.

Is this part of a pattern of OpenAI safety researchers leaving?

Yes, in the limited sense that safety-related departures and public criticism have been reported before. The circumstances differ, however, and the public record does not provide a definitive count of people who left OpenAI specifically because of safety disagreements.

Person or report Date and departure context What was said publicly
Daniel Kokotajlo and other departures, as covered by Fortune Fortune reported in August 2024 on departures including Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever. Kokotajlo estimated that about 16 of roughly 30 staff working on AGI-safety-related issues remained at that time; this was his estimate, not an official or current OpenAI headcount. Fortune quoted Leike saying safety had increasingly “taken a backseat to shiny products.” Kokotajlo also criticized the organization’s direction.
Lilian Weng, as covered by TechCrunch TechCrunch reported her departure in November 2024. Weng said she was proud of the Safety Systems team and had “extremely high confidence that the team will continue thriving.” OpenAI said it appreciated her contributions and expected the team to continue playing a key role in safe and reliable systems.
Three safety researchers, as covered by TechCrunch citing The Wall Street Journal TechCrunch reported on October 1, 2026, that their employment ended after an internal investigation. The report said OpenAI’s investigation found they had mishandled sensitive information outside established procedures. It said it was unclear whether they had first raised concerns internally.
David Robinson Robinson said he resigned during the week of October 3, 2026. In his October 3 essay for The Atlantic, he criticized the pace and culture of deployment and argued for stronger safety practices.

Did all the researchers leave for the same reason?

No. The public accounts describe different circumstances, and some departures are not presented as safety warnings at all. Weng’s statement, for example, expressed confidence in the Safety Systems team. The October 2026 report concerns employment ending after an investigation and does not establish that the researchers were dismissed for raising safety concerns. Nor does it establish whether they had raised concerns internally first.

It is therefore more accurate to describe a pattern of departures and public criticism than to assign one motive to everyone who left. The available accounts include first-person criticism, a supportive departure statement, and secondary reporting about an investigation; they do not prove that every departure had the same cause or that any one account settles the broader question of OpenAI’s safety record.

What does OpenAI say about raising safety concerns?

OpenAI’s Raising Concerns Policy, dated January 12, 2026, says good-faith AI safety concerns are encouraged, prohibits retaliation for raising them, and permits external reporting to authorities. That describes the company’s written policy. On its own, it does not establish how a particular concern or employment dispute was handled.

The wider debate remains contested. Associated Press reporting in September 2026 recorded disagreement over AI safety warnings, company incentives, and proposals for oversight. Former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo, who left in 2024 over concerns, said he remained worried that AI systems could advance faster than companies can control them. Such reporting documents the disagreement; it does not independently verify every former employee’s account.
