Eric Manu, known by his stool name Nana Ofori Paaben II, was reported in 2016 and 2017 as a chief of Adansi Aboabo No. 2 in Ghana who worked as a landscaper in British Columbia, Canada. He returned to Ghana for his leadership role, then went back to Canada to earn money and organize support for community needs. The reports describe proposed projects—not proof that the work was completed—and do not establish his current role or whereabouts.
Who is Eric Manu?
Manu is the central figure in a story about traditional leadership, paid work abroad and community development. The Washington Post’s September 2016 profile described him as a Ghanaian chief living and working in British Columbia. Graphic Online identified him as Nana Ofori Paaben II and reported in January 2017 that he was chief of Adansi Aboabo No. 2.
The coverage also uses words such as “king” and “tribe.” To avoid implying that those terms are interchangeable or explaining a traditional office beyond what the reports establish, this article uses the stool name and the community name reported by Graphic Online.
Why was a chief trimming hedges in Canada?
The Washington Post reported that Manu moved from Ghana to Canada in 2012 and worked in landscaping, including trimming hedges and planting gardens. After the death of his uncle, he was selected for a leadership role and returned to Ghana for his coronation or assumption of office. Accounts differ in their timing and description of the succession, so the reports do not support assigning it a precise date here.

Manu later returned to Canada and resumed landscaping work. The Washington Post described him earning a living while raising money and drawing on Canadian relationships to support his community. When asked why he did landscaping, he emphasized humility: “People have to be humble. Even a chief can be doing this kind of job. I’m not going to change my attitude. I’ve been simple from day one.” The statement is from the newspaper’s 2016 interview.
What support and projects did the reports describe?
The accounts portrayed Manu’s work in Canada as part of a broader effort to bring assistance home. In 2016, the Washington Post reported that his employer, Sue Watson, started the To the Moon And Back Foundation, which collected goods for shipment to the village. Manu described the community’s response to a donated shipment this way: “It was an amazing day for everyone in the community to see this magical stuff.”

Graphic Online’s January 2017 report described needs and plans that included:
- Rehabilitating the local library and clinic.
- Improving the supply of medical items.
- Finding transport for emergencies.
Those were reported aims and needs at the time. The available coverage does not confirm that the renovations, supply improvements or transport arrangements were completed.

How large was the community?
Contemporary reports gave different estimates rather than a single verified count. The Washington Post described the Akan community as having 5,000 people in 2016; Radio Canada International reported about 6,000 that year. Graphic Online also used an estimate of about 6,000. These are attributed figures from 2016 coverage, not a current census, and the discrepancy should not be resolved by choosing one as definitive.

The reports establish a historical story, not a current update. They place Manu in Canada working as a landscaper after returning from Ghana and describe community efforts and plans through January 2017. They do not establish his present location, whether he still holds the title, what happened to the projects, or the later status of the To the Moon And Back Foundation.
