Andrew Wiggins’ fit with Miami’s revamped roster looks promising because he can contribute without needing the offense to run through him: he has adapted to playing off the ball, can defend across positions one through four, and remains capable of creating with the ball. That is Miami coach Erik Spoelstra’s preseason assessment, not proof from 2026–27 regular-season games.
Why Wiggins could fit alongside Giannis and Miami’s other options
Miami’s 2026–27 group brings Wiggins together with new additions Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson, as well as established big man Bam Adebayo, according to the NBA’s season preview. With several players who can command the ball, a useful teammate is one who can contribute when someone else initiates the offense and still take on a larger role when needed.
Wiggins offers that potential balance. His off-ball work can leave room for teammates to create, while his ability to handle the ball gives Spoelstra another option when a possession needs a different look. The sources do not establish a projected usage split or a set lineup, so the fit is best understood as flexibility rather than a defined role.
What Spoelstra says Wiggins brings
In an October 1 report by Heat reporter Zachary Weinberger, published by Yahoo Sports the next day, Spoelstra described Wiggins as comfortable fitting around strong teams and players. The coach highlighted both sides of the role: Wiggins can take on difficult defensive assignments across positions one through four, and Miami can still put the ball in his hands.

“Makes it look easier than it actually is, especially for a guy that used to be a number one option, and he’ll guard the other team’s top guys. That’s one through four, and then offensively, he’s still a guy that you can put the ball in his hands, and he knows what to do with it.”
“But where he’s really improved over the last three years with Golden State and with us, he’s playing off the ball and playing off other great players, and they can toggle back and forth,” Spoelstra continued. “It’s hard to find guys with that kind of role acceptance, and still be really good at those things.”

The key point in Spoelstra’s comments is role acceptance without losing versatility. He sees Wiggins as someone who can work beside other high-level players rather than needing to remain the primary option. The remarks were reported by Weinberger; they are not presented here as a separate official team transcript. Read Weinberger’s report at Yahoo Sports.
Wiggins’ 2025–26 shooting supports a complementary role
The NBA’s 2026–27 Miami preview says Wiggins made 138 three-pointers at 41.4% in the 2025–26 season. That perimeter production gives the fit discussion a concrete basis: off-ball play can be valuable when a teammate’s drive or creation draws defensive attention. The figure describes his previous season, not a guarantee of the same results in Miami’s new lineup.

RotoWire’s player profile records a broader 2025–26 regular-season line across 68 appearances: 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.0 blocks per game, with 47.5% field-goal shooting and 41.4% from three. Those figures show that his potential contribution is not limited to spot-up shooting, but they do not quantify how his touches or responsibilities will change on this roster. RotoWire’s October 2 report says Wiggins should fit comfortably alongside Antetokounmpo and Miami’s other high-usage players, citing Weinberger’s reporting. The supporting case is clear: Wiggins has experience playing off the ball, can defend major assignments, and can still create when needed. But preseason optimism cannot establish how often Miami will use him in each role, which combinations will work best, or how the team’s results will look.
