Maybe—but a successful screen scan does not guarantee that the printed code will work. Printing changes the code’s physical size, sharpness, contrast and surface, while scan distance, lighting and the reader also matter. To find out whether it will work, test a proof printed at its final size on the material and finish you plan to use.
Why a QR code can scan on screen but fail on paper
A screen displays a backlit, pixel-based image at a particular scale. A printed QR code is a physical grid of modules—its small squares—made with a printer on a specific material. Scaling, ink spread, print registration, surface reflections and finishing can change how clearly a scanner sees that grid. The printed code may also be scanned from farther away or by a different device than the one used for the screen test.
GS1 notes that QR-code size depends on encoded data, print quality, resolution and scanning environment. Consumer phones and supply-chain scanners may also differ in their capabilities. GS1’s retail implementation guidance addresses scanner and print considerations; it does not establish that a code that works on one phone will pass every other test.
What to check when a printed QR code will not scan
- Size and density: A longer URL or additional encoded information can produce more modules. If the overall code stays the same size, those modules get smaller and may be harder to print or read. GS1 Ireland identifies payload, print quality, resolution and scanning environment as sizing factors.
- Quiet zone: The clear area around the code may have been crowded by text, a border, nearby artwork or a cut edge.
- Contrast and colour: Scanners need to distinguish light and dark modules. Muted contrast or multiple colours can make that harder. GS1 warns that red modules can be problematic with red-light barcode scanning and verification.
- Grid shape: Stretching, warping or changing the module shapes can disrupt the regular pattern.
- Material and finish: Glossy surfaces can reflect light, while transparent or semi-transparent material can undermine reliable reading.
- Logo or image overlay: An overlay blocks encoded content and relies on error correction to recover it. A large image—or one covering important locating features—can prevent a scan.
- Test conditions: Distance, lighting and reader type affect results. Test in conditions similar to the ones in which people will use the code.
These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of any particular failed code. Inspect the artwork and printed proof before changing the destination or generating a replacement.

How large should you print a QR code?
There is no single width that guarantees a successful scan in every setting. Choose a size based on the actual code matrix and payload, printer and material, scan distance, and intended reader. A longer URL or more encoded attributes may call for a larger symbol to keep it practical to print and scan.
For QR codes powered by GS1 at retail point of sale, GS1 Ireland gives an X-dimension—the width of one module—range of 0.396 mm to 0.990 mm. That range is scoped to retail POS; it is not a universal minimum or maximum for consumer QR prints. Follow the requirements for the specific application when producing packaging or retail codes.

You can estimate the overall width by multiplying the number of modules across plus eight quiet-zone modules by the chosen module width:
(modules across + 8) × module width
The eight extra modules provide four modules of margin on each side. For example, GS1 Ireland illustrates a 29-module code: 29 plus 8 gives 37 modules in total. At its stated retail X-dimension bounds, that works out to 14.652 mm at 0.396 mm per module or 36.63 mm at 0.990 mm per module. This is a calculation for that sample matrix and those scoped retail values, not a recommended size range for every QR code.

Leave the required clear margin
GS1 guidance specifies a quiet zone four module widths wide on all four sides of a standard QR Code. Keep text, borders and artwork outside it. Also account for folds, cut lines and any print variation that could intrude on the clear area. GS1 Australia advises allowing slightly more than the minimum where ink spread or plate registration could reduce the margin.
Choose a clear, stable print surface
Use dark modules against a plain, light background when possible. GS1 advises strong contrast between light and dark modules and cautions that poor contrast or more than two colours may impair scanner performance. Its warning about red modules is particularly relevant to retail scanning and verification.

GS1 Australia’s printing guidance says the substrate affects barcode quality. It advises against high-gloss reflective and transparent or semi-transparent backgrounds, including transparent wrappers over the code. A code that reads on uncoated paper may behave differently after lamination, wrapping or application to another surface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not treat error correction as a fix for poor printing
QR codes use Reed–Solomon error correction. GS1 lists levels L, M, Q and H as 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% in its examples. These figures describe correction levels, not a guarantee that the same percentage of a printed code can be covered or damaged. Higher correction adds redundancy but can enlarge the symbol or reduce how much data fits at a constrained size.

GS1 puts the trade-off this way: “Higher error correction levels add redundancy but increase the size of the barcode, therefore the impacts on the printing, scanning and packaging need to be considered.” Increasing correction will not automatically rescue a code that is too dense, too small or poorly printed.
Logos are not part of the QR symbology specification referenced by GS1. They cover encoded data and depend on error correction to reconstruct it. Keep an overlay modest and test the finished code rather than assuming a selected correction level will compensate.
Proof the code that people will actually scan
- Generate the code with the intended destination and payload. Avoid adding text that does not need to be encoded, since more data can make the symbol denser.
- Place it in the real layout at its final physical size. Keep a four-module quiet zone on every side and place text, borders, artwork, folds and cut lines outside it.
- Keep the modules square, evenly arranged and unaltered. Use strong contrast; avoid red modules in the retail or verifier contexts described by GS1.
- Export and print at a resolution suitable for the intended production process. The sources do not establish one file format or printer resolution as universally sufficient.
- Print on the intended stock with the planned finish or wrapper. Inspect for reflections, ink spread, registration problems and an intact clear margin.
- Scan the proof at the expected distance and lighting with the phone or scanner types people are likely to use. A successful phone scan is useful, but it does not establish retail barcode quality.
- For retail packaging or a modified symbol, arrange verification against ISO/IEC 15415 and the relevant symbology requirements. GS1 says each unique modified barcode should be verified.
- Confirm that the code decodes to the intended, live destination.
Choose a proofing workflow that fits the job
| Workflow | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Home or office proof | Small quantities or frequent revisions | Test a final-size proof with the intended readers; results depend on the printer and stock available. |
| Print or label service | Output quantity or finish exceeds in-house needs | Ask for a proof on the actual production substrate and finish. |
| Retail packaging run | Repeatable production subject to application requirements | Follow applicable GS1 specifications and arrange formal verification where required. |
These are workflow distinctions, not performance claims about particular printers or vendors. GS1 Australia describes both pre-printed labels and on-site printing with specialized equipment as possible application methods; the material and scanning context still matter.
