Modern “typewriters” range from a machine that prints words on paper to compact digital drafting devices. Astrohaus/Freewrite, Nakajima, Pomera, Zerowriter and BYOK all offer ways to put a keyboard and a writing-focused workflow ahead of a browser full of distractions—but only the Nakajima WPT-160 in this group prints directly onto paper. The others save drafts digitally, with different screens, keyboards and export options.
What makes these modern typewriters different?
These devices are designed for writing with fewer general-purpose features than a laptop or tablet. Most pair a keyboard with a modest display and a way to save or transfer drafts. That is the product premise, not proof that a particular device will make its owner more productive.
The key distinction is what happens to the words: Nakajima’s WPT-160 can print onto paper; the other products here produce digital drafts for local transfer or cloud syncing. Prices and availability below are listings or maker information accessed October 3, 2026, and can change.

Astrohaus / Freewrite: E Ink drafting devices
Astrohaus sells the Freewrite line, whose devices emphasize drafting on a dedicated screen rather than using a conventional computer interface. The Smart Typewriter Gen3 pairs a full-size mechanical keyboard with a frontlit E Ink display and aluminum body. It supports USB-C charging and offline transfer, as well as cloud syncing through Astrohaus’s Postbox service. Astrohaus says the device has no apps, notifications or built-in AI and can be used offline. See the Smart Typewriter Gen3 product page.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The direct store displayed the Smart Typewriter Gen3 at $699, Traveler at $549 and Alpha at $349 on October 3, 2026; special editions were listed at higher prices. These are store prices, not verified marketplace offers, and may change. The Freewrite device store lists the current range.
The products descend from the Hemingwrite Kickstarter campaign, which Astrohaus says launched in 2014 and raised $342,000 from more than 1,000 backers. The company says Freewrite devices began shipping in early 2016. Astrohaus also reports that writers in more than 50 countries have written over 115 million words on its devices; that is a company-reported cumulative figure, not an independently audited measure of productivity. Its company history provides those figures.

It is listed at $299.99 and in stock on the seller’s page as of October 3, 2026.

The seller lists the machine at 11.6 pounds, a meaningful consideration if you expect to carry it often. Specifications and listing status are on the Monroe Systems WPT-160 page.

BYOK: bring your own keyboard
BYOK stands for “Bring Your Own Keyboard.” The October 3, 2026 roundup describes it as a $199 monochrome writing screen with adjustable backlight, microSD and USB-C transfer, designed to pair with a separately chosen keyboard. Reusing a keyboard you already like may be appealing, but the setup means carrying both the screen and keyboard. A roundup user, Phil W. Bayles, described the device as having “proved to be worth its weight in gold”; that is an individual testimonial, not a general performance finding.
The maker’s product page did not provide readable product details in the available source, so confirm specifications, price and stock before relying on those figures. The reported price and description appear in the October 3, 2026 roundup; the BYOK device page is the place to check for current information.
Which kind of device fits your writing workflow?
- Choose a paper-printing workflow: The Nakajima WPT-160 is the only model here that prints directly onto paper. Account for its size, paper, ribbon and correction supplies.
- Choose E Ink with an included mechanical keyboard: Consider Freewrite or Zerowriter. Freewrite offers cloud syncing through Postbox as well as USB-C offline transfer; Zerowriter’s Fold has a preorder schedule that the maker presents as an estimate.
- Choose more editing and local transfer options: Pomera’s listed word-count, spell-check and editing tools, plus USB-C, SD and QR transfer, suit a workflow that needs more than basic drafting.
- Reuse a keyboard you already own: BYOK is designed around a separate keyboard, but check the current device specifications and plan for carrying both pieces.
- Prioritize compact carrying weight: Pomera is listed at 1.37 pounds; Freewrite Traveler is described as 1.6 pounds in the roundup. The Nakajima seller lists the WPT-160 at 11.6 pounds.
For any digital model, check exactly how it exports and backs up files before committing to a local-only or cloud-based workflow. These devices are not interchangeable: display type, editing features, transfer method and whether the keyboard is included can matter more than the shared typewriter label.
