Palm Beach County also reported lower enrollment, but its figure uses a different count date and comparison baseline, so the two declines are not a direct apples-to-apples comparison.
How much has Broward County enrollment fallen?
WLRN reported that Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) counted 12,300 fewer students on September 14, 2026, than on the comparable date the previous year, a reported decline of 5.6%. That figure includes charter schools; it is not a count of district-operated schools alone. The district’s first-day count in August had shown a decrease of about 11,000.
The reported districtwide total was 177,575 students in 2026–27, compared with 204,721 four years earlier, in 2022–23. WLRN described the earlier total as 13% larger. The district also reported that charter enrollment was down 2,071 students, the first loss in the thousands during the period described, while district prekindergarten was the only grade or level to grow, by four students. WLRN’s September 22 report supplies those current-year figures.
BCPS describes its benchmark as an official year-to-year statistical count of PreK–12 students entered in its FOCUS student information system. Its enrollment-counts page explains the purpose and population counted. Historical totals on the district’s historical enrollment page—236,667 for 2025–26 and 247,501 for 2024–25—are useful context, but they are not substitutes for WLRN’s September 2026 year-over-year comparison.

How does Broward compare with Palm Beach County?
Palm Beach County also reported declining enrollment. Its September 3, 2026 memo says the 11th-day count, tabulated August 24, recorded 156,059 students in traditional district-operated schools and 177,772 across all public schools in the county. Traditional district-operated PreK–12 enrollment was 6,090 below the previous October benchmark; charter enrollment was 978 lower.
| District and reported measure | Count date | Comparison | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broward County Public Schools; figure includes charter-school losses | September 14, 2026 | Year over year | 12,300 fewer students; 5.6% decline, as reported by WLRN |
| Palm Beach County traditional district-operated PreK–12 schools | August 24, 2026 (11th day) | Previous October benchmark | 6,090 fewer students, according to the district memo |
| Palm Beach County charter schools | August 24, 2026 (11th day) | Previous October benchmark | 978 fewer students, according to the district memo |
The comparison shows a larger reported loss in Broward, but the figures are not measured the same way: Broward’s number is a September year-over-year benchmark comparison that includes charter losses, while Palm Beach’s is an August 11th-day count compared with the previous October benchmark. Palm Beach’s memo says a later October count would be more stabilized for planning. The district’s enrollment-report catalog lists the current 11th-day report; the September 3 memo gives the counts and comparison caveat.

Why the decline matters for budgets and school capacity
WLRN reported more than 60,000 empty seats accumulated across Broward over five years and said the enrollment loss translates to more than $430 million less in the district budget. These are figures reported by WLRN, not independent calculations here. Falling enrollment can reduce spending power for school programs and resources, while underused buildings raise questions about how the district allocates space.
Those systemwide numbers do not mean every school has the same enrollment problem. WLRN cited Lloyd Estates Elementary in Oakland Park at 61% of capacity and Dolphin Bay Elementary in Miramar at 48%. Dolphin Bay supporters raised concerns about a proposed combination with Glades Middle, which the report put at 38% enrollment, to create a K–8 model. These examples describe particular schools, not districtwide utilization.

Are Broward schools closing because enrollment is falling?
Enrollment declines and unused capacity were part of the context for school-closure discussions, but the cited report did not say that every proposed closure was caused by enrollment alone or that closures had been approved. As of WLRN’s September 22, 2026 report, the School Board was considering 10 closures for the following school year. The board had voted the prior year to close six schools; WLRN reported average annual savings of $1.2 million per school and $10 million collectively. Projected savings for the newly proposed closures were not yet known because the affected schools had not been finalized.
Board member Rebecca Thompson said at the meeting covered by WLRN: “It is not just to save money. It is not just to look at spreadsheets and make the numbers work.” Her statement describes her position, not necessarily the view of the whole board or proof that a particular closure would improve student outcomes.

What is known about the closure timeline?
WLRN reported plans—not confirmed later outcomes—for staff to bring datasets covering 11 proposals to an October 6, 2026 workshop, survey families at affected schools, make survey results available by a November 4 workshop, and hold a final board vote in December. Because those dates have passed or are near, the report should not be treated as an update on the proposals’ present status. The figures and timeline above reflect WLRN’s reporting as of September 22, 2026.
What is—and is not—established about the cause
The cited current-year sources establish the size and timing of the reported decline, but do not establish why Broward enrollment fell in 2026–27. The numbers alone cannot show whether families moved, changed schooling options, or were affected by another factor. A cause should not be presented as fact without direct evidence beyond the count and closure discussion.
