It relies on the accessory maker publishing firmware metadata to the Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL), an Apple OTA profile for TestNet testing, and a compatible Apple home hub. If an update is missing, the accessory maker may not have published an eligible update for that device.
What Apple’s Matter beta update process does
Apple’s Apple Matter OTA – User Guide, revision R5 dated February 12, 2026, documents a way for developers to test accessory firmware delivered through Apple Home. The primary home hub acts as the OTA Provider, delivering an update to a Matter accessory acting as the OTA Requestor.
This is separate from joining Apple’s public beta program. Apple’s Beta Software Program FAQ concerns pre-release Apple operating-system software; it does not describe how consumers enroll Matter accessories in firmware betas. The OTA guide instead describes a TestNet profile workflow for accessory testing.
What you need before testing
- A compatible Apple home hub: Apple names Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini. The primary home hub provides the update; a secondary hub does not. Apple’s guide states that its OTA provider test procedure is available from iOS 16.5 beta 3 / tvOS 16.5 beta 3 or above. That is the guide’s stated test baseline, not a complete compatibility matrix for every current device and software release.
- Thread support when the accessory uses Thread: A Thread accessory requires a Thread-capable hub. Check the accessory’s transport and the exact hub model’s capabilities rather than assuming every listed hub supports Thread.
- Firmware and DCL setup from the accessory developer: The developer must publish the update URL and required metadata in the relevant DCL. You cannot make an update appear merely by installing a profile.
- The Apple OTA profile for TestNet: TestNet DCL data requires Apple’s profile on the home hubs and controllers. Without that profile, Apple Home uses MainNet DCL. Apple says no profile is needed to test OTA with MainNet DCL.
Apple says platform-level Matter support began with iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, tvOS 16.1, and HomePod software 16.1. That broader support statement should not be confused with the later OTA provider test baseline above. Apple also says Matter accessories intended for distribution or sale need CSA certification; for OTA testing, its guide says a certified accessory is not required.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How developers set up an Apple Home OTA test
1. Publish the test firmware in TestNet DCL
The accessory developer registers the OTA URL and required version, product, and vendor information in TestNet DCL. The firmware image must use the Matter software-image format. Apple lists these required OTA header values: SoftwareVersion, VendorID, ProductID, SoftwareVersionString, PayloadSize, ImageDigest, and ImageDigestType. The guide describes generating a Base64 checksum for TestNet entries.
Uncertified firmware updates must use TestNet DCL. An uncertified accessory can still be added to Apple Home for testing by choosing “Add Anyway.”

2. Install the Apple OTA profile and restart devices
Install Apple’s OTA profile on the home hubs and controllers participating in the test. Confirm that the profile has not expired, then reboot those devices. The profile selects TestNet DCL data; without it, the devices use MainNet DCL. If the profile is expired, Apple recommends filing feedback through Feedback Assistant.
3. Check the accessory in the Home app
Once the TestNet entry is published and the devices have restarted, inspect the accessory’s settings in Home to see whether the new firmware version appears. Update behavior depends on the home’s software-update setting:

- Confirm that the maker published an update for the exact accessory. Apple Home can only discover firmware that the manufacturer or developer has made available through the relevant DCL entry.
- Check the active DCL network and profile. TestNet updates require the OTA profile on all relevant hubs and controllers. Verify that it is not expired and reboot the devices after installation. MainNet testing uses MainNet DCL without the profile.
- Verify the primary hub and software baseline. Only the primary home hub provides the update. Confirm it is running software supported by Apple’s OTA guide, rather than checking only a secondary hub.
- Allow time for discovery and installation. Apple says a TestNet update notification may appear within 24 hours of entering the firmware version in TestNet DCL. It recommends allowing 48 hours for the update to be applied, assuming the accessory uses the default OTA Requestor implementation. These are approximate procedural estimates, not guarantees.
- Validate the firmware package and DCL entry. Check the Matter image format, required header values, and checksum. In the TestNet DCL model-version field, verify that Software Version Valid is true.
- Check the update setting and status. If automatic updates are off, make sure developer consent and the manual Update action have been completed. If Home shows Requested, the hub may still be transferring the image.
Does Apple Home unlock betas for every Matter accessory?
No. There is no general consumer switch in Apple Home that opts every Matter accessory into beta firmware. Access depends on the accessory maker publishing an update and, for TestNet development, configuring the DCL entry and Apple OTA profile correctly. The title does not identify a particular accessory or firmware release, so availability for any specific model cannot be confirmed here.
For accessory compatibility and certification context, Apple’s Developing apps and accessories for the home explains Apple Home platform support. Apple’s public beta guidance recommends installing pre-release software only on non-production devices that are not business-critical; it does not establish a consumer accessory-firmware beta procedure.
