These are calculations from company outlooks, not company-reported payout ratios, and the different EPS measures and fiscal years make the comparison directional rather than perfectly like-for-like.

The payout estimates divide the annualized dividend by the endpoints of each company’s stated EPS range. A lower percentage means more forecast earnings remain after the dividend under this calculation, but it does not establish that the dividend is guaranteed or that one stock is a better investment.
Why DICK’S has the lower indicated payout
DICK’S board declared a $1.25 quarterly dividend on August 24, 2026, payable September 25. Four payments at that rate would total $5.00 per share over a year, assuming the rate continues. Its FY2026 diluted EPS guidance is $10.94–$11.94, which produces the lower implied payout range in the comparison.
The forecast is not simply an unadjusted view of ordinary operations. DICK’S says its FY2026 outlook includes share dilution and costs associated with the Foot Locker acquisition, expected charges for store-model redesigns, and offsets for settlement income and tariff refunds. It also describes a more cautious outlook for the balance of the year amid marketplace conditions. Those items matter when interpreting the EPS range: the calculated coverage reflects the company’s stated outlook, including those factors, rather than a normalized earnings estimate.

Best Buy’s dividend uses a different earnings measure
Best Buy approved a 1% dividend increase in March 2026, setting the quarterly payment at $0.96; its August 2026 Q2 FY2027 release declared the same amount. The annualized $3.84 figure assumes four quarterly payments at that rate. After the second quarter, Best Buy raised FY2027 adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $6.70–$6.90. Dividing the annualized dividend by that adjusted EPS range yields an implied payout of about 56%–57%.
That calculation uses adjusted EPS, not reported diluted EPS. As a result, the comparison does not put both companies on exactly the same accounting basis: DICK’S figure is against diluted EPS guidance, while Best Buy’s is against adjusted diluted EPS guidance. It also compares DICK’S FY2026 outlook with Best Buy’s FY2027 outlook.

What cash flow can—and cannot—tell you here
Best Buy reported $1.296 billion in cash from operating activities for the six months ended August 1, 2026, compared with $783 million in the corresponding prior-year period, according to its Q2 FY2027 filing and results materials. The company attributed much of the change to the timing and volume of inventory purchases and payments, as well as income-tax payment timing.
Operating cash flow is not free cash flow: capital expenditures must be subtracted to calculate free cash flow. A meaningful dividend-coverage ranking on that basis would also require comparable periods and calculations for both companies. The figures here do not establish that comparison, so the earnings-payout result should not be treated as a cash-flow coverage verdict.

How to read the comparison
- What it says: On the published outlooks and the stated calculation, DICK’S has the lower earnings payout, leaving more forecast earnings relative to its annualized dividend.
- What limits it: The fiscal-year periods differ, and the EPS bases are diluted EPS for DICK’S and adjusted diluted EPS for Best Buy.
- What it does not say: It does not compare dividend yield, which depends on share price, or establish comparable free-cash-flow coverage.
- What controls future payments: Dividend declarations remain subject to each company’s board. DICK’S says future dividends and their amounts and dates depend on board authorization and factors including future earnings, cash flows, and financial requirements.
