There is no single established score for an LLM agent’s general creativity. A meaningful evaluation must name the task, define what counts as a good result, and check whether its measures capture more than fluent or unusual output. That matters especially for agents: performance on one prompt or benchmark does not establish how well a system will create in unfamiliar contexts or over a longer interaction.
What does “creativity” mean in an LLM agent evaluation?
Creativity is not one observable property. In a particular task, evaluators may care about originality, usefulness, variety, or task-specific quality. Those dimensions can diverge: an answer may be novel but ineffective, or polished but conventional. A single combined score can conceal that trade-off unless its scoring rule is explicit.
It also helps to distinguish a bounded task with a clear goal from an open-ended task whose success criteria are abstract. Results on a constrained prompt support a claim about that task and setup—not, by themselves, about an agent’s general creative potential.
Why one creativity score is not enough
Metrics can measure fluency instead of originality
Perplexity is sometimes used in creative-writing evaluation, but it can reflect how predictable or fluent text is rather than whether the work is genuinely novel. A low or high value should not be treated as a creativity verdict without evidence that it tracks the intended quality in that domain.

Automated judges can be sensitive to prompts
LLM-as-a-Judge assessments may change when the judging prompt changes and can show label biases. To make such results interpretable, report the judge instructions and labels, and avoid presenting one judge’s ranking as an objective measure.
Other indicators have domain limits
Lexical-diversity indices depend on their implementation, while syntactic-template measures may be a poor fit for formulaic domains. A 2026 EACL search-result summary describes evaluation across creative writing, problem-solving, and research ideation, and reports that metrics can disagree on the same examples or separate outputs in one domain but not another. This is a warning against assuming a metric transfers unchanged across tasks; the summary does not establish a universal ranking method.

How context changes what an evaluation can tell you
A 2024 arXiv paper, “Stick to your Role! Stability of Personal Values Expressed in Large Language Models”, argues that evaluations built from many similar queries in minimal contexts may reveal little about behavior in deployment, where contexts vary. It studies stability across contexts using a psychology questionnaire and downstream tasks, and treats context stability as a comparison dimension alongside cognitive abilities, knowledge, and model size. The paper reports differences in stability across the model families it studied; that is a finding about those evaluations, not a direct score of creativity.
For creative agents, context robustness is therefore a separate question: does the system continue to produce useful, distinctive work when the prompt, persona, constraints, or interaction history changes? If a result holds only in one carefully tuned setup, state that boundary rather than generalizing beyond it.

Assessing creativity beyond text
Open-ended agent tasks can produce artifacts whose value is not captured by text metrics. The Luban research description concerns Minecraft building and distinguishes visual structure from pragmatic functionality, using multidimensional human studies. Its search-result summary reports improvements over baselines in both dimensions. Because that account is a search-result summary rather than a verified full-method review here, it supports the example of separate visual and functional criteria, not a numerical headline or a general claim about agent capability.
The broader lesson is to score the artifact in the terms that matter for its task. For a building agent, visual appeal and whether the construction works are different questions; for other domains, the relevant dimensions will differ.

A practical framework for comparing LLM agents
- Specify the task and its openness. Describe the instructions, constraints, and what counts as success. Make clear whether the task has a bounded answer or an open-ended goal.
- Choose dimensions before scoring. Separate originality or novelty, usefulness or effectiveness, diversity, and task-specific quality where applicable. Explain any rule used to combine them.
- Test context variation. Compare outputs across meaningful prompt, persona, or interaction-context changes. Report whether the conclusion survives those changes rather than relying only on minimal-context prompts.
- Validate each metric for the domain. Explain why an automated measure represents the quality being assessed. Compare independent measures and investigate disagreement instead of treating one metric as definitive.
- Ground judgments in people and reproducible details. For human ratings, report who judged the outputs and the rubric. For all evaluations, provide the model and version, task instructions, prompt and sampling settings, and repeat count so others can understand the comparison.
- Limit the conclusion to the evidence. State which task, dimensions, and contexts the agent performed well on. Do not convert task-specific performance into a claim about universal creativity.
What a credible result should let readers conclude
A useful evaluation makes its claim auditable: readers can tell what the agent was asked to do, which aspects of the result were valued, how those aspects were measured, and whether the finding persisted across contexts. When measures disagree, report the disagreement and the scope of each measure rather than hiding it inside an overall score.
The available work points toward task-specific, multidimensional, and context-aware assessment—not a standardized protocol or unitary benchmark for creativity. Until a measure is shown to track useful outcomes across relevant tasks and contexts, “creative” should describe demonstrated performance under stated conditions, not an agent’s general capacity.
