The Pixel 5 was not a flagship in every spec-sheet sense: Google chose a Snapdragon 765G instead of a top-tier processor. But it paired that capable midrange chip with a genuinely compact body, a 90 Hz OLED display, a 4,080 mAh battery, wireless charging, IP68 resistance and Google’s camera software. That balance—not raw speed—is why the 2020 phone deserves more credit.
Why the Pixel 5’s compromise made sense
In 2020, many phones were growing larger and chasing premium processor specifications. Google took a different route with the Pixel 5: it kept the handset light and small, while preserving features that affect everyday use. The result was a deliberate trade-off, not an attempt to pass a midrange processor off as a flagship one.
The phone measures 144.7 × 70.4 × 8.0 mm and weighs 151 g, with a 6-inch display. Those figures make “compact” a concrete description rather than a vague compliment. Its 6-inch FHD+ flexible OLED panel resolves at 1080 × 2340 (432 ppi) and refreshes at up to 90 Hz. Google’s specifications list 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage alongside the Snapdragon 765G. Google’s Pixel hardware specifications provide the full figures.
The processor was the obvious concession. The Snapdragon 765G is capable midrange silicon, not the top-tier chipset expected in a conventional flagship. That distinction matters for demanding games and heavy workloads, but it does not by itself define how pleasant a phone is to use. WIRED’s October 2020 review praised the Pixel 5’s screen, battery life and performance, while noting that its video quality lagged competitors. Those are period reviewer judgments, not a promise of equal results in every app or for every user. WIRED’s review captures both sides of the package.

The hardware around the processor was unusually complete
A smaller, lighter phone often asks buyers to give up battery capacity or premium conveniences. The Pixel 5 did not make all those cuts. Google lists a 4,080 mAh typical battery, Qi wireless charging, reverse wireless charging and IP68 water and dust resistance. It also included USB-C charging. Together with the 90 Hz screen, these features made the phone feel more complete than its processor tier alone might suggest.
Google said the Pixel 5 offered all-day battery life and could last “up to 48 hours” with Extreme Battery Saver. That 48-hour figure was a company claim based on third-party testing in California in mid-2020 using pre-production hardware and software, with Extreme Battery Saver enabled; it is not an ordinary-use runtime guarantee. Google’s 2020 launch announcement includes the qualification.

Its cameras fit the Pixel approach, with a video caveat
The rear camera setup combines a 12.2 MP main camera with a 16 MP ultrawide; the front camera is 8 MP, according to Google’s specifications. Those numbers do not describe image quality on their own. The Pixel 5’s appeal also depended on Google’s camera software and image processing, which were central to the Pixel experience.
Still photography was not the whole story. WIRED’s 2020 review said video quality lagged competing phones. That caveat is worth keeping in view if video capture is a priority: the Pixel 5’s strong overall camera reputation should not be taken to mean it led in every camera use case.

Was the Pixel 5 actually a good phone?
For someone who wanted a manageable Android phone with a smooth display, strong battery capacity, useful extras and Pixel camera software, the answer was yes. It was less compelling for someone whose priorities were top-tier processing power or best-in-class video. TechCrunch’s October 2020 review described it as compact relative to phones the reviewer had been testing and identified 5G and the larger battery as major reasons to upgrade from the Pixel 4. That is a useful comparison of priorities, not proof that every Pixel 4 owner needed to switch. TechCrunch’s review explains that contemporary assessment.
What its update promise means now
Google’s launch-era commitment was a minimum of three years of operating-system and security updates from the phone’s first US Google Store availability. That was a historical promise, not evidence that the Pixel 5 remains supported today. Google’s current specifications page preserves the original commitment, but a buyer considering one now should verify the device’s present support status rather than treating that launch promise as ongoing coverage. Google’s Pixel specifications state the original term.

Is a used Pixel 5 still worth buying?
Its original design strengths remain clear, but whether a particular used Pixel 5 makes sense depends on facts not established by its original spec sheet. Check current software support, the individual phone’s battery and physical condition, compatibility with your carrier, and the asking price. No single answer applies across sellers, regions or network providers.
