The record is in uranium’s long-term contract price, not its spot price. Cameco’s month-end industry-average series put the long-term price at US$96.50 per pound in August and September 2026, above its US$95 level in 2007. But the available stock-return figures show uranium miners lagging the spot price through June—not that every nuclear-related stock was falling, or that miners were still down later in the year.
Which uranium price broke the 2007 level?
Cameco’s month-end industry-average series records the long-term uranium price at US$96.50 per pound in both August and September 2026. The series had previously shown US$95 per pound from May through December 2007. Those are nominal US-dollar prices; they are not adjusted for inflation. The 2026 figure is above the 2007 level, but it is a long-term price indicator—not the spot-market record.
| Price measure | 2007 comparison | 2026 reading |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term uranium price, Cameco month-end industry-average series | US$95/lb, May–December 2007 | US$96.50/lb, August and September 2026 |
| Spot uranium price, Cameco month-end industry-average series | US$136/lb, June 2007 | US$89.63/lb, September 2026 |
Source for all figures: Cameco Corporation’s industry-average price series. The spot price in September 2026 was below its June 2007 peak, so saying simply that “uranium prices” broke a record blurs two different measures.
Why can the contract price rise while uranium-miner stocks fall?
Spot and long-term prices measure different parts of the market
Uranium does not trade on an open commodity exchange in the same way as many widely traded commodities. Buyers and sellers negotiate privately, and Cameco says its industry-average series uses month-end prices published by UxC and TradeTech. The spot price reflects the spot market; the long-term indicator reflects prices associated with longer-duration contracting.

Most uranium is sold through multiyear utility-producer contracts, according to Sprott. Contract terms can include escalated base prices or later deliveries linked to spot prices, along with negotiated floors and ceilings. A rising term indicator can therefore signal stronger pricing for future contracted supply without immediately changing the price every producer receives for every pound. It is not a guaranteed revenue figure for a company or a direct forecast of its share price.
Contracting and consumption are not the same as spot trading
Cameco reports UxC estimates that about 589 million pounds of U3O8 equivalent were contracted in the long-term market over a five-year period, compared with about 815 million pounds consumed in reactors. These are consultant figures reported on Cameco’s supply-and-demand page, not a complete inventory of all supply or a measure of every transaction. They help explain why utilities’ longer-term procurement can matter even when the spot market is quieter.

In Cameco’s SEC-filed second-quarter 2026 disclosure, UxC figures put spot-market volume at about 12 million pounds in Q2 2026, versus 16 million pounds in Q2 2025. That is a comparison of quarterly spot-market volume, not total uranium consumption or long-term contracting.
Miners’ shares reflect more than the published uranium price
A miner’s share price reflects investors’ expectations about its business and future results, not just a market price indicator. Sprott’s interpretation is that near-term uncertainty, risk-off positioning and subdued sentiment weighed on uranium-mining equities despite stronger long-term fundamentals. That is Sprott’s analysis, not established proof of what caused each share-price move. Sprott also says the term market is more closely related to utility procurement, project economics and incentive pricing for new supply.

Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel said on 31 July 2026 that the long-term price had strengthened amid increased on- and off-market contracting in the first half of the year, as customers focused more on security of supply. The statement describes Cameco’s view of contracting conditions; it does not explain listed-stock performance.

| Uranium spot price | +4.28% year to date | Sprott’s reported spot-price measure |

The monthly figures are a separate window: Sprott reported that in July 2026 senior uranium miners fell 7.19% and junior miners fell 6.37%. It said both groups rebounded in early August and were then near flat for the year. That early-August update does not establish their performance through September or at the time you read this.
These benchmarks track uranium-mining equities, not a broad basket of nuclear utilities, reactor developers or equipment makers. An index is a measurement benchmark, not an investment that can be bought directly; Sprott’s index returns also do not establish the return of any particular investor’s portfolio.

What the longer price history does—and does not—show
Cameco’s 2025 data show an average spot price of US$73.54 per pound for that year and a December 2025 long-term price of US$86.50 per pound. Those figures provide context for the 2026 readings, but they are not a like-for-like comparison: one is an annual average spot price, while the other is a month-end long-term price.
Together, the cited figures show that the long-term indicator rose above its 2007 level while spot remained below its 2007 peak, and that the cited miner indexes underperformed spot through the first half of 2026. They do not show that all nuclear stocks fell, establish a single cause for the gap, or guarantee that higher long-term prices will lift miners’ shares.
