Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court set October 4, 2026, for the first round of the presidential election and October 25 for a possible runoff. Voters will also choose governors, senators and federal and state or district legislators. The Associated Press reported on October 3 that 12 presidential candidates are on the ballot, with the contest dominated by incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. A candidate must receive more than half of valid votes to avoid a runoff, according to the AP’s account of the electoral rule.

Why do some investors favor a Bolsonaro win?
The market thesis is about expected policy, not simply the candidates’ names. The CNBC-origin report, carried in a syndicated version, says some investors expect a Flávio Bolsonaro victory to support Brazilian bonds, the currency and equities because they anticipate greater fiscal discipline. The report presents this as investor positioning and conditional analysis, not a settled market consensus or a guaranteed reaction.
Fiscal promises are the key distinction
The Council on Foreign Relations describes Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign platform as emphasizing lower inflation, cuts to public spending, a public-debt ceiling and development of critical minerals. Those are proposals, not enacted policies. CFR describes Lula’s platform as focused on continuing inequality reduction, expanding industry and sustainability policy.

Markets can reprice quickly when investors expect a change in fiscal policy, but the longer-term result depends on whether a government can pass and carry out its plans. The syndicated CNBC-origin account says Congress’s composition will be important to reform prospects. It also notes the practical constraint: much of Brazil’s federal budget is mandatory, making spending cuts or tax increases politically difficult. A president’s campaign platform is therefore not a reliable proxy for what the government will deliver.
What a Lula win could mean for the real
The same report relays a possible currency scenario under a Lula victory and conditional upside scenarios if reforms are successfully implemented. Those are analyst scenarios, not observed results or independent guarantees. The available reporting does not establish a certain exchange-rate outcome, and the fiscal program that a president can negotiate with Congress would matter alongside the election result.

Would a Bolsonaro victory automatically boost Brazilian stocks?
No. The reported investor thesis is that a Bolsonaro win could be more supportive of Brazilian assets because of expectations for fiscal restraint. That expectation may influence prices, but it does not establish that stocks, bonds or the real must rise. Asset performance would also depend on whether promised measures pass, how they are implemented, and how investors assess the broader economy.
Likewise, the report’s less favorable framing of a Lula victory is a relative market view, not proof that every asset would fall. The distinction worth watching is between an immediate repricing of expectations and the slower, uncertain effects of policy on debt, inflation, growth and corporate earnings.

What could prevent either candidate from delivering a fiscal plan?
Congressional composition and coalition-building are central. Brazil’s president cannot enact a fiscal program alone, and the budget’s large mandatory component narrows the room for discretionary cuts. Measures such as reducing spending or raising taxes can also be politically costly. The election simultaneously fills legislative seats, so the results for Congress may shape what proposals can advance.
Even with congressional support, a pledge is not an outcome. For investors, the meaningful signals after the vote would include the governing coalition, legislative support, the details of proposed measures and evidence that they are being implemented. The campaign platforms alone do not establish what inflation, interest rates or asset prices will do.

What else could shape voter and investor sentiment?
Household pressures and public safety
Reuters’ October 1 coverage identifies living costs, household debt, unemployment and crime concerns as broader factors affecting voter sentiment. These issues also matter to the economic outlook investors assess, but the reporting does not isolate their effects on any single market price or predict how voters will weigh them.
Relations with the United States and China
Brazil’s next government will have to manage relations with both the United States and China, which CFR identifies as Brazil’s two largest trading partners. Reuters describes Lula as emphasizing independence and trade ties with China, while the Bolsonaro family has a closer political relationship with the U.S. administration. These are differences in approach; neither by itself establishes the future course of trade or diplomatic relations.
Amazon policy: distinguish the record from the pledges
The Associated Press reports that Amazon deforestation rose by about 60% during Jair Bolsonaro’s 2019–2022 presidency, with more than 45,000 square kilometers cleared, based on official data. Under Lula, deforestation fell by 45%, reaching a more-than-decade low, the AP reports. Those figures describe past periods, not guaranteed future performance.
For the next term, Flávio Bolsonaro has pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2029; Lula’s target is zero net deforestation by 2030, according to the AP. The targets differ in wording and deadline, and each would depend on enforcement and policy after the election.
What to watch as results come in
- Whether there is a runoff: the first-round result will determine whether the contest proceeds to the scheduled October 25 vote.
- The congressional balance: legislative results will help indicate how much room the next president has to negotiate fiscal reforms.
- Specific fiscal proposals: distinguish campaign positions from measures introduced, approved and implemented.
- Market reaction versus delivery: an initial change in the real, bonds or equities reflects expectations; it is not evidence that promised reforms have succeeded.
- Policy beyond fiscal questions: trade and diplomatic relationships, household economic conditions and Amazon enforcement affect the broader outlook as well.
The close runoff snapshots and conditional investor scenarios make a simple “one candidate means markets rise, the other means they fall” reading unreliable. The defensible market thesis is narrower: some investors see Flávio Bolsonaro’s fiscal platform as more supportive of Brazilian assets, while the eventual effect depends on the election outcome, Congress and what the next government can actually enact.
