To earn four candles at Grandpa’s Shrine in Stardew Valley, reach at least 12 evaluation points. Grandpa first evaluates your farm at the start of Year 3, based on milestones from the first two years, but missing the target then is not permanent: place a Diamond on the shrine to request another evaluation.
When Grandpa evaluates your farm
Grandpa’s note says he will return at the start of the third year to assess your success. The result appears as candles around Grandpa’s Shrine, with the number lit determined by your evaluation points. The evaluation covers achievements from your first two years, but you can ask for another evaluation later by placing a Diamond on the shrine.
Grandpa’s Letter begins: “If you’re reading this, you must be in dire need of a change.” The line is part of the in-game letter and sets up the farm evaluation.
How many points each candle requires
The Stardew Valley Wiki lists 21 available evaluation points. Four candles—and the Statue of Perfection—require 12 or more points.

Choose a mix of milestones that suits your farm
There is no single required route to four candles. Points come from different types of progress, so you can combine earning money with skills, achievements, relationships, keys, and Community Center progress rather than trying to complete every possible milestone.

Build earnings
The Wiki’s scoring table lists cumulative earnings thresholds of 50,000g, 100,000g, 200,000g, 300,000g, 500,000g, and 1,000,000g. Each of the first five thresholds is worth one point; reaching 1,000,000g adds two points, for up to seven points from earnings. These are cumulative milestones, not seven separate goals to pursue independently.
Raise skills and earn achievements
Skill levels and achievements are also part of the evaluation. They provide alternatives to relying only on money or social progress. The available scoring excerpt does not establish every skill level or achievement condition, so check the Wiki’s current scoring table before planning around a specific subcondition.

Progress through relationships and exploration
Relationships count toward the evaluation, but marriage is not a universal requirement: the scoring system offers multiple routes. Exploration progress also matters; obtaining the Skull Key and Rusty Key are listed milestones.
Advance the Community Center
Community Center progress contributes points, including both completing the Community Center and its ceremony. Consider this route if restoring the Center is already part of your plans; the evaluation does not require every listed category.

What to do if you have fewer than four candles
- Place a Diamond on Grandpa’s Shrine. This requests another evaluation, so you do not have to start a new save just because the first result fell short.
- Allow the evaluation to trigger. The Stardew Valley Wiki says it occurs after a game load or, in some cases, on the first day of the following season.
- Use the extra time to pursue milestones that fit your save. Earnings, skills, achievements, relationships, keys, and Community Center progress offer different ways to build your score.

Claim the four-candle reward
At 12 or more points, Grandpa’s Shrine lights all four candles and awards the Statue of Perfection. The shrine may not announce the reward: interact with it manually after meeting the threshold. The Wiki reports that the statue produces 2–8 Iridium Ore per day.
