Before opening the PHN16-I31
The screw and clip procedure below comes from LaptopMedia’s PHN16-I31 teardown guide, not an Acer service procedure. Acer’s indexed lifecycle guide covers the earlier PHN16-72 generation, so it should not be used as confirmation of I31 service steps. Acer’s March 2026 user manual search result includes PHN16-I31, but it is a user manual rather than a service guide.
- Shut the laptop down completely and place it on a clean, soft surface.
- Use a Torx T6 driver and a thin plastic pry tool. Avoid metal tools that can scratch or damage the frame.
- Do not assume instructions or part specifications for PHN16-72 or PHN16-71 apply to the PHN16-I31.
How to remove the bottom cover
- Power off the laptop and set it upside down on the prepared surface.
- Remove the nine Torx T6 screws retaining the bottom cover. Keep them organized for reassembly.
- Starting at an accessible edge, work a thin plastic pry tool around the perimeter to release the clips. Move carefully rather than forcing a resistant section.
- Take particular care near the large rear and side exhaust openings, where the plastic frame and radiator fins are vulnerable to damage.
- Once the perimeter clips are released, lift the bottom cover away.
After the cover is removed, the teardown guide reports access to the battery, memory, storage, wireless module and fans. It does not establish an Acer-approved repair procedure or warranty outcome for user-performed work.

Choosing RAM or an SSD
Memory: verify the complete SKU first
For PHN16-I31-55MB, Acer Malaysia lists DDR5-5600 memory and a maximum of 32 GB. That limit is specific to the listed SKU and market; it does not establish the maximum for every regional PHN16-I31 configuration. Match capacity and module arrangement to the exact machine specification, and do not assume a faster-rated module will run at its advertised speed.

Storage: confirm the second position is actually available
The teardown guide’s tested laptop had a free second M.2 position, but another unit may already use it. If yours is free, an M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD is the format supported by the guide and Acer’s PHN16-I31-55MB storage specification. Acer’s page says its PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD offers read and write speeds up to 7 GB/s; that is Acer’s vendor specification, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every drive or workload.
Regional SKU and generation differences
PHN16-I31 is a family, not one universal parts configuration. Acer Vietnam lists PHN16-I31-72XE and PHN16-I31-74MN with different graphics and display specifications. Acer Malaysia’s PHN16-I31-55MB page lists an i5-14450HX, RTX 5060, 16 GB memory, 1 TB PCIe NVMe 4.0 storage and a 32 GB maximum memory specification. These are market- and SKU-specific details, not a promise that every I31 matches them.

Before ordering components, identify the complete model code on your laptop or its product documentation and compare it with the matching Acer regional support page. Do not carry over specifications or disassembly steps from PHN16-72 or PHN16-71 merely because those models also use the Helios Neo 16 name.

Adding a memory module or SSD is a narrower task than removing the cooling assembly. If the work requires disturbing the cooling assembly, replacing board-level components, or overcoming a stuck or damaged clip, stop rather than applying force. Cooling-assembly removal requires replacing thermal interface materials before reassembly, according to the exact-model guide.
