The remarkably well-preserved Inca girl often shown in photographs is most likely the Llullaillaco Maiden, also known as La Doncella. She was one of three children found near the summit of Volcán Llullaillaco in Argentina in 1999. She is not Juanita, another Inca child mummy discovered in Peru.
Who is the Inca girl in the picture?
La Doncella was found in a ceremonial burial on Volcán Llullaillaco, in Salta Province, northwestern Argentina. The Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (MAAM) places the volcano at 6,739 meters and dates the excavation to February and March 1999. She was buried with two younger children and ritual offerings. MAAM’s account of the discovery and collection describes the children as victims of capacocha, an important Inca ceremony that connected communities, sacred places and deities.
Her exact age is not settled in the accounts cited here: MAAM estimates around 15, while Penn Museum calls her 13. The safest description is a teenage girl. Penn Museum’s account of the frozen mummies gives its estimate; MAAM gives the older one.
She is not Juanita
Juanita, often called the Ice Maiden, is a different Inca girl, found on Peru’s Ampato volcano in 1995. The Llullaillaco Maiden was discovered four years later in Argentina. Images and headlines sometimes blur the identities, but they refer to separate children and separate mountain burials.

Why is the Inca girl mummy so well preserved?
The Maiden was naturally preserved by the severe cold at Llullaillaco’s high altitude. Penn Museum explains that sustained below-freezing temperatures were especially important; rapid freezing, moisture and conditions that hinder decay also contributed. Her appearance is not evidence of artificial embalming.
Forensic and archaeological expert Andrew Wilson, quoted by National Geographic, described her as exceptionally preserved in his opinion and said she “looks almost as if she’s just fallen asleep.” That is Wilson’s assessment, not an objective ranking of mummies. The striking appearance can make the remains seem lifelike, but it cannot tell us exactly what happened in her final moments.

What do researchers know about her life and death?
Researchers examined chemical signals in the Maiden’s hair, which can preserve evidence of diet and substance use over time. National Geographic’s account of the 2013 research reports that her access to foods including maize and animal protein improved in the year before her death. The analysis also found sustained high coca use during that final year and a sharp increase in alcohol in her last weeks.
Researchers interpreted those changes as consistent with her selection for a ceremony. They proposed that coca and chicha, an Andean fermented drink, may have had ritual or sedating roles. Those are interpretations of chemical evidence and historical context—not direct observations of the events. The findings do not establish that she was rendered unconscious, or precisely how or when she died.

The burial is associated with capacocha, but her individual role is not certain. MAAM says she was probably an aclla, or “chosen woman”; that remains a tentative identification. The museum describes capacocha as a ceremony involving children selected from communities, sometimes from chiefly families.

MAAM displays the three children one at a time for strict conservation reasons, rather than presenting all of them together. Its current exhibit page named the Lightning Girl as the child being presented when checked in 2026, so the Maiden should not be assumed to be on view. Check the museum’s current visitor and exhibit information before planning a visit.
