CScale Exits Stealth With $145 Million to Develop Optical Links for AI Systems

CScale announced a $145 million Series C on September 30, 2026, as it emerged from stealth. The company says the financing brings its total funding to $188 million and will support development and commercialization of an optical interconnect designed for AI scale-up. Its central promise is to contain optical-link failures without interrupting compute; the company has not yet published results showing that the design achieves this.

What CScale announced

CScale’s September 30, 2026 announcement describes a $145 million Series C and the company’s exit from stealth. CScale says it has raised $188 million in total and will use the new capital to accelerate development and commercialization of its optical interconnect for AI scale-up. These are company-reported financing figures. CScale’s announcement names Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, Premji Invest, Sutter Hill Ventures, and Maverick Silicon as investors in the round.

The release says the round was “led by Atreides Management, together with Valor Equity Partners,” with Premji Invest joining “as co-lead.” Data Center Dynamics summarized the three firms as co-leading the round. CScale also identifies NVIDIA and Intel Capital as its first strategic investors. Data Center Dynamics’ report covers the funding and notes that few technical details had been made public.

What is optical interconnect, and what is CScale building?

An optical interconnect uses light to carry data between computing components. CScale describes its intended product as an integrated light engine and optical connections that let accelerators communicate as a larger, tightly coupled system. Its goal is to provide high bandwidth and very low, predictable latency for AI scale-up—the work of linking accelerators so they can operate together.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The company frames the potential need around very large AI data centers. It says gigawatt-class facilities expected by the end of this decade could use a single scale-up domain of thousands of accelerators spread across dozens of racks. That is a scenario in CScale’s forward-looking case for the technology, not evidence that the company already serves a system of that size.

How does CScale plan to keep AI compute running when optical links fail?

CScale’s argument is that a link failure that is uncommon in isolation can become a recurring operational concern when a system contains vast numbers of links. It says its architecture is intended to contain optical failures so that an affected connection does not interrupt compute across the system. The company’s homepage gives the same plain-language objective: contain failures so compute keeps running. CScale’s homepage describes that goal, while the press release states the broader reliability rationale.

CEO Martin Lund put the positioning this way: “We’re designing the interconnect for continuity. Lasers will fail. Compute shouldn’t.” The distinction matters: this is a design goal, not a published reliability result. The materials available do not give a measured failure rate, explain the containment mechanism in detail, or show independent test results.

What is known about the company, and what remains open?

CScale says it was founded in 2023, is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and had approximately 85 employees globally at the time of the announcement. The company describes Lund as having led its Common Hardware Group at Cisco, with responsibility for silicon, hardware systems, and optics, including Silicon One. It identifies founder and CTO Sanjai Kohli as a communications entrepreneur who founded SiRF; CScale says his later company, Inovi, was acquired by Facebook in 2014.

The announcement establishes a funded development effort, but not a product buyers can evaluate or deploy. The reviewed materials do not specify detailed architecture, product specifications, pricing, a commercial availability date, named production customers, or confirmed deployments. Without those details or measured results, readers can assess CScale’s intended approach and financing, but not its performance against existing systems.

For now, the useful way to read the announcement is as a bet on continuity as AI networking grows: CScale wants optical links to combine bandwidth and low latency with a way to limit the consequences of component failure. Whether its design can deliver that balance at scale remains to be demonstrated.
