The key payroll question is whether this is your first job in Ireland: register a first job yourself through Revenue’s Jobs and Pensions service; for a later job, your employer registers it. If you are arriving from abroad, check the current PPS number and work-permission requirements that apply to you.
Before you move: confirm work and moving arrangements
Ask your employer about onboarding and relocation costs
Ask HR or your employer what information they need for onboarding, confirm your start date and payroll details, and find out whether they will reimburse moving expenses. Keep receipts and invoices. Calling a payment a “relocation allowance” does not by itself make it tax-free: Revenue’s treatment depends on the reason for the move, the type of expense, and how it is documented.
Revenue says tax-free reimbursement may apply where a move is necessary to take up employment or move to a new employment location, and the expense is actual, reasonable, properly controlled, and a direct result of changing residence. Potentially eligible expenses include removing belongings, storage, transit or storage insurance, cleaning stored furniture, travel connected with the removal, and certain property transaction costs. Temporary accommodation and subsistence have separate conditions. Disturbance money is treated as salary; house-purchase capital costs and bridging-loan interest are excluded. See Revenue’s guidance on removal and relocation expenses and ask your employer how it will assess and record any reimbursement.
If you are arriving from abroad
Revenue says people who have just moved to Ireland to start work will need to apply for a PPS number. Use the current Revenue guidance for people moving or returning to Ireland and the relevant government instructions for your circumstances; the application steps and supporting requirements should be checked on the official pages.

If you hold an employment permit and plan to change employer, check the conditions attached to your permit before accepting or starting the new role. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment says holders of their first employment permit are generally expected to remain in that employment for nine months, subject to exceptions and permit-specific rules. This is not a rule for every worker or every permit. Read the department’s changing-employer guidance.
Start utility, telecom and insurance checks early
Contact electricity, gas, waste, telephone, broadband and TV providers before moving day. Ask whether your current service can transfer to the new address, when it can be activated, whether there are fees, and whether your contract changes. Broadband availability depends on the location and network coverage, so check service at the new Eircode rather than assuming a transfer will work. Citizens Information recommends ideally giving telecom providers at least one month’s notice.

Review your home and contents insurance for cover while belongings are in transit. Policy terms may depend on whether you use professional movers, and removal firms may offer insurance; check the actual terms rather than assuming your household policy or the mover’s cover applies. Citizens Information’s moving-to-a-new-home checklist covers utilities, telecoms, insurance and address changes.
Choose how to move your belongings

There is no universally better option: the right choice depends on the size and distance of the move, your schedule, and the cover available for your belongings. For either option, keep invoices and records if you intend to ask your employer for reimbursement. Revenue’s eligibility rules concern actual qualifying expenses, not simply which method you choose.

On moving day and when you take possession
Record utility readings and confirm who is responsible
Take final meter readings at the old home and initial readings at the new one. Photos can help preserve a dated record. Confirm the account start and end dates with providers and settle charges for the property you are leaving.
Check essential services before relying on them for work
Confirm that internet service is available and active at the new address before planning to work remotely. Transfer and connection timing depend on provider and location. If service is not ready, contact the provider promptly about activation timing and alternatives.

Update your employer and important accounts
Give your employer your current contact details, even if salary is paid electronically. Update Revenue through its online services when relevant, and notify social welfare services if you receive payments. Also check address records with financial institutions, insurers, doctors and other health professionals, and any motoring policies or documents. If you have children, check school records; the accounts and services that need updating depend on your circumstances.
An Post mail redirection can help catch post sent to your old address, but it does not replace updating important accounts directly. Citizens Information lists redirection and the types of organisations to consider notifying in its home-moving guidance.

Set up payroll: first job in Ireland or a later job?
Your first job in Ireland
Use Revenue’s Jobs and Pensions service to register your first job in Ireland. Revenue says you need the employer’s tax registration number, the job’s start date and your pay frequency. The service is available through Revenue’s “Add a job or a pension” guidance.
A subsequent job or change of employer
For a later job, the employer registers the job. Give your employer your PPS number and check your PAYE records and tax credits in myAccount if your first payslip or tax deductions look wrong. Citizens Information says providing your PPS number and using Revenue’s PAYE services as needed can help avoid emergency tax. Its guidance explains tax, PRSI and pensions when changing jobs.
Do not self-register a later job simply because you have changed employers. The distinction is whether this is your first job in Ireland or a subsequent one.
