In 2017, All Whites defender Andrew Durante said New Zealand had improved under coach Anthony Hudson, while striker Chris Wood believed the squad had more quality and depth than the 2010 team. Those were assessments made before New Zealand’s play-off against Peru—not proof of a later World Cup result. The finals record behind the comparison is clear: New Zealand lost all three matches in 1982, then went unbeaten in 2010 but still exited in the group stage.
What the All Whites meant by improvement in 2017
Durante described progress across the team’s international windows under Hudson, who had taken charge in August 2014. In FIFA’s 9 November 2017 report ahead of the Peru play-off, Durante said: “We have improved in every window under Anthony Hudson.” He also said, “We have progressed massively in four years.”
Durante pointed to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup as valuable experience, particularly for younger players accustomed to facing opposition from the Pacific island nations. He said the tournament gave them big-game experience against high-quality opponents in a pressure situation. That is a player’s assessment of preparation and development, not a measure of World Cup results.
How New Zealand’s 1982 and 2010 World Cup campaigns compared
New Zealand’s first World Cup appearance was in 1982; its next was in 2010. FIFA’s team-history account describes 2010 as a major improvement on the three defeats of the debut campaign. The match outcomes show both the progress and its limits:

| World Cup | Group-stage results | Unbeaten? | Progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1982 | Lost all three matches. (FIFA, “New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup: Team profile and history,” 8 October 2025.) | No | Did not advance from the group. (FIFA, same account.) |
| 2010 | Drew against Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay. (FIFA, same account.) | Yes; New Zealand was the only unbeaten team at the tournament. (FIFA, same account.) | Did not advance from the group. (FIFA, same account.) |
The 2010 side improved on 1982 in results and avoided defeat, but an unbeaten group-stage exit is not the same as reaching the knockout rounds or winning the World Cup.
Wood’s comparison was about squad quality and depth
In FIFA’s June 2017 profile, striker Chris Wood compared the current squad with the 2010 team: “We have a lot more quality and more strength in depth, so we have the tools to be as good as that team. We have a long way to go to achieve anything, but we have the ability to surpass them,” he said.

Wood’s statement was a judgment about the squad’s potential, not a claim that the 2017 team had already surpassed the 2010 side’s tournament achievement. The distinction matters: the 2010 comparison is based on completed World Cup matches, while the 2017 comments describe how players viewed their development and resources before the Peru play-off.

Hudson was appointed in August 2014 after New Zealand’s qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup ended with a heavy defeat to Mexico in the intercontinental play-off, according to FIFA’s 21 July 2016 account. After New Zealand won the OFC Nations Cup in 2016, FIFA reported a 54-place rise in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking to 93. That dated ranking movement reflects the team’s standing after that competition; it is not a statistic about its World Cup performances or a definitive measure of squad quality.
