The top-up is intended to strengthen Postdoctoral Fellowships and Doctoral Networks and is expected to help more than 700 additional researchers build careers in Europe. That figure is a forecast, not a count of grants already awarded.
What the €210 million announcement covers
Announced on 1 October 2026 under the Commission’s Choose Europe initiative, the increase applies to MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships and Doctoral Networks across 2026 and 2027. The Commission said strong demand prompted the additional funding and announced it at an event marking MSCA’s 30th anniversary. It reported 21,627 applications to the 2026 Postdoctoral Fellowships call as evidence of that demand.
The announcement does not specify how the additional €210 million is divided between the two actions. The action budgets below are the full published budgets for each call year, not a breakdown of the top-up.

The Commission’s estimate of more than 700 additional researchers refers to the expected reach of the extra funding across the programme; it is not an announced award list or a guaranteed number of successful applicants. The 2027 figures are also estimates, not final award counts. The announcement does not provide individual odds of success.

How the two MSCA opportunities differ
Postdoctoral Fellowships
These calls are aimed at postdoctoral researchers. The 2026 call closed on 9 September 2026, according to the European Research Executive Agency (REA). The Commission’s published 2027 estimate is more than 1,800 potential postdoctoral beneficiaries.
Doctoral Networks
These calls support doctoral training and candidates through research networks. The REA listed 24 November 2026 as the deadline for the 2026 Doctoral Networks proposal call when its page was accessed. The Commission’s estimate for the 2027 call is more than 2,000 potential doctoral candidates.

Eligibility, proposal requirements and award processes are action-specific; applicants should use the relevant official call guidance rather than assume the two opportunities share the same rules.

The Commission says the amended Horizon Europe 2026–2027 Work Programme provides the last MSCA funding opportunities under the current 2021–2027 Horizon Europe framework. It also says more than €1.3 billion is foreseen for MSCA in 2027. MSCA has involved more than 150,000 researchers since its creation in 1996, including 23 Nobel laureates, according to the Commission’s MSCA site.

MSCA is funded by the European Commission and supports research and innovation projects through researcher mobility and doctoral and postdoctoral training. The Commission’s announcement contains the funding and forecast figures; the REA applicant page provides practical call information and guidance.
