Helensburgh Central councillor Graham Hardie has been suspended from the Scottish Liberal Democrats after being charged in connection with an alleged assault on his partner or former partner, according to a report published by The National on October 1, 2026. Hardie denies the charges and remains a councillor; the allegations have not been established in court.
What charges does Graham Hardie face?
The National reported that Hardie appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on September 23, accused of striking his partner or former partner and causing injury at a property in Cardross on July 14. The report says he denies the charges. These are allegations, not findings of guilt. The National’s report, republished by inkl, is the source for the case details.
The report also says Hardie was charged with breaching a bail undertaking that barred him from approaching or contacting the woman or entering the home. It alleges that he entered the address and contacted her. The report does not establish that either alleged offence occurred.
What happened to his party membership?
A Scottish Liberal Democrats spokesperson told The National: “Once we were made aware of these reports the party has moved to suspend his membership.” The report says Hardie remains a councillor despite the suspension.

What is his role on Argyll and Bute Council?
Argyll and Bute Council’s councillor profile lists Graham Archibald Hardie as the representative for Helensburgh Central. It gives his term as May 5, 2022 to May 4, 2027, and lists him as Depute Policy Lead for Education and Children’s Champion for Helensburgh and Lomond.
The profile also lists committee and board memberships, including Community Services; Environment, Development and Infrastructure; Planning, Protective Services and Licensing; Audit and Scrutiny; and the Argyll and Bute Licensing Board. It displays his party as Liberal Democrats. That council listing is separate from party membership: it does not address the suspension reported by The National, and the profile may not reflect that development.

The National reported that Sheriff Frances McCartney continued Hardie’s bail and set a trial for November 19. The report’s trial-date sentence does not specify a year. Its surrounding account concerns a September 2026 hearing, so 2026 is a contextual inference rather than an explicitly stated date.
