Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If an MCP server is not working in Cursor, start with View → Output → MCP Logs and use the error to identify whether the problem is startup, configuration, authentication, tool discovery, or networking. Then check the affected server’s settings rather than resetting every integration: Cursor says one MCP server’s crash or timeout does not necessarily affect the others.
1. Read MCP Logs to find the failing layer
Open Cursor’s Output panel and select MCP Logs. The logs can show server initialization, connection attempts, tool calls, and errors. Look for whether the failure happens before the server starts, during authentication, while connecting, or only when a tool is called. That distinction helps avoid changing settings unrelated to the error. See Cursor’s MCP reference and MCP integrations guide.
If you use a keyboard shortcut to open Output, check Cursor’s current shortcut reference for your operating system; the menu or panel route is the dependable alternative.
2. Make sure the server is enabled
In the editor, open Customize > MCPs and check that the server’s toggle is on. A disabled server will not load or appear in chat. Cursor’s CLI can also show and enable servers:

agent mcp listshows configured servers and their status.agent mcp enable <identifier>enables a server by its identifier.
Use the identifier shown by the CLI rather than assuming it matches the server’s display name. See Cursor’s CLI MCP documentation.
3. Check which MCP configuration Cursor is using
Cursor supports project-level and global MCP configuration. If you edited an mcp.json file but nothing changed, confirm that it belongs to the workspace you have open or to the intended user-level configuration. The CLI follows the editor’s configuration precedence, so its reported configuration source can help identify which file is active.
This check is especially useful when a setup works in one project but not another. Cursor documents configuration and precedence in its MCP reference and CLI MCP documentation.

4. Verify the command, endpoint, and transport
Local and remote MCP servers fail in different ways. A local server is launched with a command and arguments; a remote server connects to a URL and may require headers. Compare the values in the active configuration with the server provider’s instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
| Server type | Check |
|---|---|
| Local, typically stdio | Confirm the executable exists, the command and arguments are correct, and the process can start in Cursor’s environment. |
| Remote HTTP or SSE | Confirm the endpoint URL, required headers, and network reachability. Check that the configured transport matches what the server supports. |
Cursor’s MCP reference describes stdio, HTTP, and SSE transports. A server’s connection instructions should determine the correct values; do not substitute a transport or endpoint based on guesswork.
5. Check environment variables and authentication
A server may start from a terminal but fail inside Cursor if required environment variables are not available to the app. Cursor advises making shell-profile variables available to the application and restarting Cursor after changing the shell profile. Check that required credentials are present and complete any required OAuth sign-in.

- Keep secrets in environment variables rather than putting them in screenshots or shared configuration.
- Use keys with only the permissions the server needs.
- Review the server’s code and security implications before connecting it to sensitive systems.
Cursor’s setup and security guidance is in its MCP integrations guide and MCP reference.
6. Check tool discovery separately from server connection
A server showing as connected does not prove that the particular tool you need is available. Inspect the tool inventory in chat, or use the CLI command below to list tools for a server:
agent mcp list-tools <identifier>
Check the listed names and any requirements shown. If the chat interface offers per-tool controls, confirm the needed tool is enabled for that interaction. Cursor documents status and tool-list commands in its CLI MCP documentation.

7. Apply network fixes only when symptoms point to networking
If logs or connection behavior suggest a network problem, open Cursor Settings > Network > Run Diagnostics to check Cursor connectivity. For a corporate proxy that blocks HTTP/2 streaming, Cursor recommends setting HTTP Compatibility Mode to HTTP/1.1 and then restarting Cursor. For VPN-related DNS errors, fully restart Cursor; if the errors persist, check the operating system’s DNS resolver.
These steps address specific proxy, VPN, DNS, or connectivity symptoms. They are not general fixes for a malformed configuration, disabled server, or missing tool. See Cursor’s network, proxy, and remote connections guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. For Remote SSH, check the local and remote sides
With Remote SSH, the local machine makes AI requests while the remote host provides file access. A problem can therefore come from local internet access, pressure on remote CPU or memory, or an unstable SSH connection. Cursor recommends restarting Cursor after reconnecting because a dropped session can leave stale processes. Follow the Remote SSH and network guidance when the failure coincides with a remote-session issue.

9. Re-add or update only the affected server
If the preceding checks point to a server-specific configuration or installation problem, record the current error and preserve any needed settings before changing it. Cursor recommends removing and re-adding a server as a troubleshooting step. For an npm-based server, its MCP reference describes removing the server, clearing npm’s cache, and adding it again. For custom server files, update the files locally and restart Cursor.
Because this step can discard or replace configuration, use it only when the diagnosis supports it. Cursor’s instructions are in the MCP integrations guide and MCP reference.
Quick Recap
Match the fix to the symptom
- Server fails to start: inspect MCP Logs, then verify the active configuration, command, arguments, and environment.
- Authentication or connection error: check credentials, OAuth completion, endpoint details, and—if indicated—network access.
- Connected, but no expected tool: inspect the tool list and any per-tool enablement rather than treating connection status as proof of tool availability.
- Failure only over a proxy, VPN, or Remote SSH: use the corresponding network or remote-session checks, not a blanket MCP reset.
