The motive behind the reported stabbing aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 remained unknown in reports published on 1 October 2026. The airline said the cause of the flight-deck altercation was subject to a formal investigation, while Saudi investigators were reported to be working with authorities in the UAE, the United States, Oman and Israel.
What happened aboard flight FZ1073?
Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport when an altercation occurred in the flight deck. The aircraft diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. flydubai said passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.
The airline said the aircraft was secured by flydubai crew who were travelling aboard, and that they diverted and landed it safely at Tabuk. Hindustan Times quoted a spokesperson saying: “The aircraft was successfully secured by on-duty flydubai crew travelling on the flight, who diverted and landed the aircraft safely at Tabuk Airport.” Hindustan Times, updated 30 September 2026.
Contemporaneous reports described one pilot stabbing another and identified the injured captain as Indian pilot Smit Machchhar. Hindustan Times cautioned that details beyond the airline’s confirmation of an altercation had not been independently confirmed by flydubai. The Associated Press report republished by the Irish Examiner said more than 170 people were aboard; that is a reported count, not a figure confirmed in the airline statement. What was the motive?
It was not established in the reports available on 1 October 2026. flydubai said the reasons for the altercation were unknown and would be examined through a formal investigation. The Associated Press report said all scenarios remained under consideration. A regional official familiar with the investigation told AP that possibilities ranged from terrorism to mental disorders, and that nothing had been ruled out. This was provisional information attributed to that official, not a finding about motive, background or affiliation.
What did Israeli officials say?
Israeli leaders publicly characterized the incident as terrorism and raised the possibility of Iranian involvement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was “too early to say” whether Iran was involved. Those were political statements, not confirmed conclusions by investigators; they should be read alongside the airline’s position that motive remained unknown. The reports did not establish an outside actor’s involvement. Hindustan Times, updated 30 September 2026; Irish Examiner / Associated Press, 1 October 2026.

The case prompted broader debate about cockpit access, but those policy questions do not establish what happened in this flight deck or what security measures were in place. The Guardian quoted aviation-security expert Philip Baum recommending extensive background checks, medicals and psychological appraisals, with assessment continuing after employment begins. That is his recommendation, not evidence about flydubai’s screening or the suspect’s history. The British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) urged against premature speculation and said relevant authorities should investigate without interference. The Guardian’s analysis highlights competing considerations rather than a settled policy answer:
- How to prevent unauthorized entry to the cockpit while still allowing access if a pilot is incapacitated or a threat originates inside the cockpit.
- Whether access controls should be fixed or include an override, and how any override should work in an emergency.
- How to balance pre-employment screening with continuing assessment during employment.
These are general aviation-security questions. The reporting did not establish that any particular access-control or screening policy caused or could have prevented the FZ1073 incident. The Guardian, 1 October 2026, updated 2 October.
