For Laravel postcode lookup, joshdovey/postcodes is a typed client for the GB Postcodes API. It supports postcode validation and lookup, geography fields, autocomplete, distance and radius searches, reverse geocoding, and polygon queries. It is not the same integration as a Postcodes.io wrapper, and a postcode’s format, existence, coordinates, and area assignment are separate things.
Use the API client when you want hosted lookups in a Laravel application. Choose a downloadable postcode dataset when you need offline access or control over spatial analysis; choose address-level data when a user needs a precise property or UPRN rather than postcode geography.
How do I validate a UK postcode in Laravel?
First decide what “valid” means for your application. A shape check can reject malformed input, but it cannot establish that a postcode is present in a dataset. The package’s validation rule checks the postcode shape locally and then checks existence through the API. Its documented default fallback accepts a shape-valid value if the API is unavailable; strict mode instead fails validation. That fail-open behavior can preserve checkout flow during an outage, but it is not appropriate if the application must confirm current dataset membership.
The package documents PHP 8.2 or later and Laravel 12 or 13. Install it and configure the API key as follows:

Set
POSTCODES_API_KEYin the application environment, following the package’s configuration documentation. -
Use
ValidPostcode::unit()when the input must be a complete postcode unit. The general rule is for cases where outward-code or district-level input is acceptable. -
Choose the validation outage policy deliberately: keep the documented fail-open behavior or enable strict validation if an API outage must cause validation to fail.

For address forms, postcode validation should not be presented as proof that the address exists or identifies a particular property. Postcodes can cover multiple addresses; use an address-level service if the workflow needs property-level precision.
How can I look up a postcode and get its local authority?
Use the package’s Postcodes::get() method for a lookup that can return no result, or Postcodes::getOrFail() when the controller should treat a missing result as an error. The repository documents typed results and administrative and census geography fields; Laravel News describes fields including local authority, ward, parliamentary constituency, NHS integrated care board, police force area, census information, and estimated population. Access the returned typed object’s fields rather than treating the response as an unstructured guarantee about a specific address.
The package also documents autocomplete and batch lookup, with batches of up to 100 postcodes per request. Its API configuration includes a default one-day cache, timeout and retry settings, distance unit, detail level, and field selection. Successful responses are cached. Documented retry behavior covers transient timeouts, connection failures, burst rate limits, and server errors; exhausted plan quota is not retried. If you do not need postcode boundary geometry, select only the fields your application uses or disable boundary data to reduce response size. These are documented package behaviors, not independent performance measurements.
How do I get postcode latitude and longitude in Laravel?
The package’s lookup result includes latitude and longitude fields, as illustrated in its documentation and Laravel News coverage. These coordinates describe a postcode-level representative location; they do not identify every property within the postcode or guarantee a rooftop position. Use them for postcode-level display, proximity calculations, or general mapping—not as an address pin where property precision matters.

For property-level coordinates and unique property identifiers, the Postcodes.io homepage points to Ideal Postcodes as a possible broader address-data option; that is a vendor comparison, not an independent assessment.

How do I find postcodes within a radius or polygon?
The package repository documents distance calculations and matrices, nearest-postcode lookup, radius searches, reverse geocoding, and searching within GeoJSON polygons. Use a radius query when the question is “which postcode locations are near this point?” and a polygon query when the area is an explicit shape. A postcode-level search still returns postcode geography, not a list of exact properties inside the area.
Boundary geometry is included by default according to the repository. For simpler lookups, request only needed fields or remove boundary geometry; for spatial queries, retain or supply the geometry the operation needs. Set a cache policy that matches how fresh the application’s postcode data must be, and handle API outages and quota exhaustion separately: the package documents retries for transient failures, but not for exhausted plan quota.
What is the difference between Postcodes.io and GB Postcodes API?
joshdovey/postcodes is a Laravel client for the GB Postcodes API. Postcodes.io is a separate service with its own endpoints and data sources; Laravel News specifically distinguishes this package from an earlier Postcodes.io wrapper. Choose by the interface and data source your application needs, not by assuming the names refer to the same service.

Its autocomplete can return an empty list with HTTP 200; inspect the response list, not just the status. Its source code being MIT-licensed does not make all underlying postcode data free of separate terms. Rank #3

Postcodes.io’s autocomplete documentation says queries prefix-match case-insensitively and may return an empty list or up to 100 postcode entities. Since an empty result can still carry HTTP 200, applications should test whether the result list contains a match. Its source-code licence and the data licence are also distinct: Postcodes.io says GB postcode data may be used under OS OpenData terms, while Northern Ireland BT postcode data has different terms and commercial use requires a licence from NI Land & Property Services.

A postcode-to-area field is an assignment method, not proof that every address in the postcode lies wholly inside one administrative boundary. ONS describes two different approaches. ONSPD links current and terminated postcodes to geographies using point-in-polygon; where postcode addresses straddle a boundary, it assigns the postcode according to the area containing the mean grid reference of those addresses. NSPL first assigns postcodes to Output Areas using the same initial method, then references Output Areas to higher geographies, such as local authority districts, using a population-based best fit.
That distinction matters for analytics. A postcode geography lookup is useful for routing, grouping, or approximate regional reporting, but boundary effects and the chosen product’s allocation method can affect results. Where a legally or operationally exact property location matters, use address-level data and the appropriate authoritative boundary source rather than infer certainty from a postcode’s local-authority field.
Where can I get GB postcode boundary data?
Choose based on whether you need points, postcode extents, or assigned administrative geography. The distinction between a postcode representative point and a postcode extent is material: a point file cannot answer which postcode-unit shapes intersect a polygon unless you accept point-based membership instead.

For free current postcode points: OS Code-Point Open is a downloadable Great Britain postcode-unit dataset in CSV or GeoPackage. OS describes it as updated every three months; its current product page reports 1.7 million postcodes.

For postcode extents: OS GB Postcodes provides a representative location and postcode extents, with monthly updates stated on its product page. The page offers a free sample and a data exploration licence; check its current terms and suitability for your intended use.

For administrative and related geography joins: consult the ONS postcode products page and the current product edition and user guide. ONS describes ONSPD and NSPL as UK-wide products, but the page’s published cadence and detail were last updated in 2016.

For a hosted lookup rather than self-hosting: use an API such as the GB Postcodes API client’s service or Postcodes.io, after checking the coverage, freshness, response limits, outage behavior, and data terms relevant to the application.
Verify jurisdiction and licensing before commercial use. Postcodes.io says its GB postcode data may be used under OS OpenData terms, but Northern Ireland BT postcode data has distinct terms and commercial use requires a licence from NI Land & Property Services. Do not assume that a service’s open-source code licence also licenses every dataset it returns.

How should I test and operate the integration?
The package documentation includes a test fake for stubbing requests. Use it to test both successful lookups and the outcomes your application must handle, without depending on a live API in every test.

Test malformed shapes separately from shape-valid postcodes that have no lookup result.

Test the selected strict or fail-open validation behavior when the API cannot be reached.

Test empty autocomplete results even when the upstream response is successful.

Test transient errors and exhausted quota separately; retry behavior for one does not imply retries for the other.

Keep only necessary fields in routine responses if boundary geometry is not required, and align caching with the freshness your product promises.
