Mumbai’s water stock is projected to last until September 5, 2027 only if the existing 10% water cut is extended and approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa is maintained. That is a conditional planning estimate reported by Hindustan Times—not a guarantee, and the available reporting does not establish that the extension has been approved.
What the September 5, 2027 projection means
Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that BMC planning data put the projected availability date at September 5, 2027 under two conditions: the 10% water cut continues, and approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa is retained. The data was reportedly presented by Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner (projects), at the civic standing committee. The report describes a scenario, not a promise that Mumbai households will receive uninterrupted water through that date. Hindustan Times
The report does not establish that the water-cut extension received formal approval. It is therefore more accurate to say the date depends on an extension than to say the cut will definitely continue.
Why reports cite different dates
The dates refer to different conditions or descriptions of available stock; they are not interchangeable forecasts. Hindustan Times reports the following dates for its stated Bhatsa scenarios, while The Indian Express separately quotes an official discussing the stock then available.

The Indian Express quoted Bangar as saying, “The water stock that we have now will only last till May, 17, 2027.” That statement reflects the stock and concern he described on September 30; it should not be substituted for the later, conditional September 5 scenario. The Indian Express
What the reported stock figures do—and do not—show
Hindustan Times reported Bhatsa’s useful storage as 717,037 million litres, with 704,965 million litres available as of September 30, 2026. Those are reservoir figures at a particular date, not a direct measure of how long every neighbourhood will have water or what tap pressure it will experience. A separate BMC Civic Diary for 2026 lists total supply to Mumbai as 4,000 MLD. It gives the following source yields; the diary and Hindustan Times do not explain the difference between their total-supply figures, so they should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as equivalent measurements. Reservoir percentages also need a reference date. The Indian Express reported Mumbai’s seven lakes at 96.64% on September 29, 2026, compared with 97.57% on the corresponding point a year earlier and 99.09% two years earlier. Hindustan Times reported Maharashtra irrigation reservoirs at 75.25% on September 30, 2026, against 88.82% at the comparable point a year earlier. How Mumbai’s water reaches consumers
BMC identifies seven water sources: Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, Lower Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa, plus Middle Vaitarna. Its 2025 Year Book says raw water from the impounded sources is conveyed through transmission mains and tunnels to treatment facilities. The described treatment includes coagulation, flocculation, settling, rapid sand filtration and post-chlorination; BMC says treated water quality is maintained in accordance with IS 10500:2012 drinking-water specifications. That system context matters because a reservoir-stock projection is not a forecast of local service conditions. The reported dates concern planned water availability, not neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood interruptions, pressure or household delivery.

Keep Mumbai’s projection separate from wider regional shortages
Hindustan Times reported that state irrigation supply would be regulated to prioritise drinking water through August 31, 2027. Irrigation secretary Prakash Misal also described anticipated shortfalls in Kalyan-Dombivli, Palghar, Vasai-Virar and other areas, and said Marathwada and Vidarbha would be hit hard. Those comments concern broader regional supply pressures; they do not change the assumptions behind the BMC projection for Mumbai. Hindustan Times

What to watch for
- Whether BMC or the state formally approves extending the 10% cut; the reporting that gives September 5 as the projected date does not itself establish approval.
- Whether approved reserve storage in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa is maintained, since that is part of the stated scenario.
- The reference date and assumptions attached to any new reservoir percentage or projected end date. A percentage snapshot alone does not establish how long supply will last.
