Why did Cristiano Ronaldo leave Portugal’s training camp?
Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp after Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença, according to Ronaldo’s statement reported by RTP Notícias on 30 September 2026. He said he would explain his reasons later and wished Portugal and his teammates well. RTP’s headline quoted his promise, “A seu tempo direi a verdade” (“In due time I will tell the truth”).

Jesus said Ronaldo was available as a substitute
The dispute followed Portugal’s 2–1 win over Norway. Jesus said he and Ronaldo had a verbal understanding that Ronaldo would not start but could come on for about 30 minutes if needed. Jesus said the match developed differently from what he expected, so he changed his plan and left Ronaldo on the bench. The Guardian reported on 1 October 2026 that Ronaldo viewed the episode as humiliating. That characterization is reported by the newspaper; Ronaldo had not yet given his full explanation in the coverage available at the time.
The disagreement became public
The Guardian reported that Ronaldo did not join his teammates in saluting supporters after the final whistle, describing it as the first visible sign of tension. It said the dispute escalated after Jesus discussed the benching publicly. What did Jesus say about leaving Ronaldo on the bench?
Jesus said Ronaldo was not meant to start against Norway, but could have played if the coach believed the match required it. The Guardian reported his statement:
“I can promise whatever I want,” the 72-year-old said. “I’m the coach and I told the player that he wasn’t going to play. I told him I would take him to the bench and that, if I needed him for 30 minutes, he would play. But I saw the game differently, so he didn’t come on. It won’t be Cristiano, or any other player, who changes my ideas as a coach. Never. Neither him nor anyone else. Not even a president. Never. Zero.”

His point was that the coach, not an individual player or even a federation president, decides the lineup and tactics. The Guardian also reported that Jesus intended to start Gonçalo Ramos rather than Ronaldo in the following Monday’s game. RTP reported Jesus saying there would be time to discuss Ronaldo, while the immediate focus was the Denmark match. Neither remark, by itself, establishes that Ronaldo’s departure ended his international career.

The Guardian described a split in the reaction: Ronaldo’s supporters defended him, while many members of the public and newspaper commentators criticized his departure as turning his back on the national team.
