Starbucks had evidence of a demand recovery before its 2026 Pumpkin Spice launch: in the quarter ended June 28, U.S. comparable sales rose 7.9%, including 4.2% transaction growth. The company then said August 25 was its strongest fall-menu launch day ever in the United States and Canada—but did not publish the sales or traffic figures behind that claim. The season opened strongly by Starbucks’ account; the public numbers do not yet show that the launch proves a durable turnaround.
What Brian Niccol means by “Starbucks is back”
At Starbucks’ January 29, 2026 Investor Day, CEO Brian Niccol said, “Starbucks is back,” while also acknowledging that “there’s more work ahead.” The statement is a management verdict, not a standalone measure of performance. A useful test is whether customers return, spend, and keep returning—and whether sales gains translate into healthier operating results.
Starbucks framed its “Back to Starbucks” strategy around service, menu innovation, and improvements to the coffeehouse experience. At Investor Day it also set FY2028 goals, including at least 3% global and U.S. comparable-sales growth, 5% or more consolidated revenue growth, and a 13.5%–15% non-GAAP operating margin. Those are company targets, not achieved results.
What the numbers say before the 2026 fall launch
The recent trend is materially better than Starbucks’ FY2025 baseline. The figures below come from company results releases; comparable sales and total revenue measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why transactions matter alongside sales
Comparable sales can rise because more customers visit, because customers spend more per visit, or both. In Q3 FY2026, U.S. transactions and average ticket both increased, so the 7.9% comparable-sales gain was not solely a higher-ticket story. That is a stronger demand signal than sales growth without transaction growth, though one quarter cannot establish how long the improvement will last.
Why the revenue decline does not cancel out the comp gains
Comparable sales track eligible stores; consolidated revenue also reflects the company’s overall store mix and business model. Starbucks attributed much of the reported International revenue decline to the China retail joint-venture conversion. The figures therefore describe different parts of the business, rather than contradicting one another. The Q3 results also preceded the August fall-menu launch, so they are context for the season, not proof that Pumpkin Spice caused the gains.

Starbucks started its 2026 fall menu on August 25. The company said the beverage rollout extended to more than 85 markets. Why a record launch does not settle the turnaround question
A seasonal day is a narrow snapshot. It can show that a menu launch drew strong demand, but without disclosed comparisons it is not possible to calculate the size of the lift or how much it contributed to the broader recovery. The prior year illustrates the limitation: Starbucks described the first week of its 2025 fall menu as its best-ever sales week in U.S. company-operated stores, yet the company memo reported no specific sales or traffic figures, according to Axios’ September 1, 2025 report.
The more telling test is what follows the launch: whether comparable transactions keep rising in later quarters, whether average ticket supports sales without masking weaker visits, and whether operating margins improve alongside demand. Seasonal enthusiasm is evidence of customer response, but sustained quarterly results are needed to show that the recovery holds beyond the opening rush.
