SpaMedica has opened a specialist cataract surgery service in East Kilbride, marking its first location in Scotland. The service is a private, self-pay option—not part of NHS Lanarkshire and not NHS-funded. People considering cataract treatment should compare it with the separate NHS service at University Hospital Hairmyres and confirm current costs, referral requirements and waits directly with the relevant provider.
What has opened in East Kilbride?
SpaMedica’s new specialist cataract surgery service is the company’s first Scottish location, according to the Association of Optometrists’ report of 28 August 2026. The launch is a new private treatment option in East Kilbride; it does not mean SpaMedica has joined NHS Lanarkshire or that its care is funded by the NHS. Association of Optometrists, 28 August 2026
SpaMedica chief medical officer Dr Alex Silvester said: “For many people, timely treatment can make a significant difference to their independence, confidence and quality of life.” That is the provider’s view of the importance of timely treatment, not a reported outcome measurement for the new East Kilbride service.
Is the service private or NHS?
The East Kilbride service is described in launch coverage as private, and a September 2026 report characterises its route as self-pay. It is separate from NHS cataract care. The available reports do not establish current prices, referral criteria or eligibility, so prospective patients should ask SpaMedica for those details before making plans. How does it compare with NHS cataract care nearby?
NHS Lanarkshire’s cataract provision is separate. University Hospital Hairmyres is listed among the health board’s sites where cataract procedures were carried out in 2024. The Scottish Parliament’s answer cites Public Health Scotland procedure data extracted in July 2025. Scottish Parliament: cataract surgery facilities in Scotland

What do the Scottish waiting-list figures mean?
Two figures have been reported, but they refer to different sources and dates. The Association of Optometrists’ 28 August 2026 article reported SpaMedica’s estimate that around 19,000 people in Scotland were waiting for cataract surgery. A 2 September 2026 Primary Health Net article reported a more exact figure of 18,956 people waiting for NHS cataract surgery, attributing it to July 2025 freedom-of-information responses from health boards obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats. Neither figure is a live October 2026 count, and neither measures the wait for an appointment at the East Kilbride centre. Association of Optometrists; Primary Health Net
What wider NHS activity figures can—and cannot—show
NHS Golden Jubilee reported 13,581 cataract procedures in financial year 2025/26 and described itself as the UK’s largest single-site provider. It also reported that its cataract activity had grown by more than 70% since 2019/20. These are figures for NHS Golden Jubilee, not SpaMedica’s East Kilbride service, and they do not show that centre’s capacity, procedure volume or waiting time. NHS Golden Jubilee, 27 August 2026
