The Bears’ own injury update that day had not named a starter: it said either Bagent or Keenum would replace injured Caleb Williams.
Who is expected to start for the Bears against the Jets?
Reporting favored Bagent, who reportedly took most of Chicago’s first-team practice reps during the week. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, quoted in Grant Gordon’s NFL.com report on October 2, said: “My understanding is that Tyson Bagent took the majority of the first-team reps at practice this week. While Ben Johnson has not yet named a starter, the expectation is that the backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, is the starter on Sunday.”
That was an expectation, not an official announcement. The Bears’ October 2 injury update said the team had not yet named its starter and that either Bagent or Keenum would start in Williams’ place.
Why did Case Keenum start the previous game?
Williams was ruled out of Chicago’s Week 3 game against Philadelphia with a hamstring injury. Bagent had sustained a concussion while replacing Williams against Minnesota and was not cleared from concussion protocol until the day before the Eagles game, according to the Bears’ team report. Keenum therefore started against Philadelphia.
