Tom Kim won the men’s individual golf gold at the Asian Games in Japan on October 3, 2026, finishing three strokes clear after a final-round 64. He completed the 72-hole event at 18-under 262.
How Tom Kim won the individual gold
Kim, also identified by Yonhap as Kim Joo-hyung, shot six-under-par 64 in the final round to finish at 18-under 262. The Asian Tour reported a three-stroke winning margin.
Associated Press reported that Japan’s Kazuki Higa won silver after a playoff and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana took bronze. The individual tournament was decided by 72-hole stroke play.
Kim’s gold was separate from the team result
The men’s team competition had a different winner. China took team gold, South Korea earned silver and Japan won bronze, according to the Associated Press. Each team had three players, with its two best scores counting each day. Kim’s individual victory therefore did not mean South Korea won the team event.

What the result means for military service
The Associated Press reported that Kim’s individual gold earns him an exemption from South Korean military service. AP described most able-bodied South Korean men as required to serve about 18 months and said Asian Games gold qualifies for the exemption. The underlying regulation and individual eligibility process are not detailed here; this is AP’s account of the policy, not an independent legal determination.
