NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Tyson Bagent was expected to start for the Chicago Bears against the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. That was an expectation, not an official team announcement: the Bears said the choice was between Bagent and Case Keenum, and coach Ben Johnson had not named a starter. NFL.com’s Oct. 2 report attributed the expectation to Bagent taking most of the first-team practice reps.
Why the Bears needed a starting quarterback
Chicago ruled Caleb Williams out for a second consecutive game because of a hamstring injury suffered against Minnesota. With Williams unavailable for the Week 4 home matchup with New York, the Bears were choosing between backup quarterbacks Bagent and Keenum. The team’s Oct. 2 update said either one would start; it did not announce a final decision.
What the reports say about Bagent and Keenum
| Quarterback | Reported evidence | Status in the Oct. 2 reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Tyson Bagent | Rapoport said Bagent took the majority of the first-team practice reps that week. He had won the backup role out of camp, according to NFL.com. | Expected to start, according to Rapoport’s report; not officially named by the Bears. |
| Case Keenum | Keenum remained in the decision and had recently started against Philadelphia, according to the Bears’ roundup. | Still a possibility as of the cited reports. |
Rapoport, identified by NFL.com as an NFL Network insider, said on Friday’s episode of The Insiders: “My understanding is that Tyson Bagent took the majority of the first-team reps at practice this week. While Ben Johnson has not yet named a starter, the expectation is that the backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, is the starter on Sunday.” The distinction matters: the report points to Bagent as the likely choice, while the team had not confirmed him as its starter.
When the Bears play the Jets
The game was scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, at noon CDT, at Chicago. ChicagoBears.com’s Week 4 listing identifies it as the Bears’ home game against the Jets.
