His decision to disclose the Pentagon Papers grew from a change in conscience as well as from access to classified information. The title “Daniel Ellsberg’s Stories of Courage and Foreboding” is a useful description of those themes, not the verified title of an Ellsberg book.
Who was Daniel Ellsberg?
Ellsberg worked as a defense analyst at the RAND Corporation and in the U.S. Defense Department. He spent two years in Vietnam as a State Department observer, then became an opponent of the war and a peace activist. His official biography traces that shift from government work toward public dissent, though the meaning he assigned to it is best understood as his own retrospective account. Daniel Ellsberg’s extended biography
His career put him close to decisions and assessments about U.S. policy. In 1971, he released the Pentagon Papers, a 7,000-page top-secret study of U.S. decision-making in Vietnam, to The New York Times and The Washington Post. Ellsberg described his choice as risking his career and freedom to expose what he believed were deceptions and delusions shaping foreign policy. Ellsberg’s memoir page
Why did Ellsberg release the Pentagon Papers?
In Ellsberg’s account, professional knowledge alone did not explain his decision. He described a moral change: meeting Gandhian draft resisters helped him see that people could take direct action against the war. In his extended biography, he wrote, “As it was, their moral courage was contagious.” That is Ellsberg’s reflection on his own transformation, not an independent explanation of every motive behind the leak. The Pentagon Papers documented U.S. decision-making in Vietnam. Ellsberg’s disclosure made a secret government study available to major newspapers, setting off a confrontation over whether the government could prevent publication. The study’s existence and the publication battle are distinct from the broader question of how much the leak changed U.S. policy; the sources cited here do not establish that it ended the war or brought down the Nixon presidency.
What happened after the leak?
The Nixon administration sought an injunction to stop publication. The dispute reached the Supreme Court, which ruled 6–3 on June 30, 1971, in favor of allowing publication to proceed, according to the Associated Press. That ruling concerned the government’s effort to block newspapers; it was not a judgment by the Court on Ellsberg’s criminal conduct. Associated Press account of Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers

Ellsberg was charged with theft, conspiracy and violations of the Espionage Act. His criminal case ended in a mistrial after evidence emerged of government-ordered wiretapping and break-ins. A mistrial is not an acquittal; the precise outcome matters when describing the legal aftermath. Associated Press account
Where does the foreboding come in?
Ellsberg’s work and activism extended beyond Vietnam. His book The Doomsday Machine addresses his experience with nuclear-war planning, widening the story from secrecy around one war to the risks of decisions involving nuclear weapons. His books therefore cover different but related concerns: government secrecy, the use of force, and the possibility of catastrophe. Ellsberg’s biography and works
