The Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that roughly 9,000 U.S. personnel were heading to the Middle East aboard two naval groups. The figure, attributed to an unnamed U.S. official, covers more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines—not a reported ground-force deployment into Iran. AP described the groups as en route; its report did not confirm their later arrival.
What the reported 9,000-person deployment includes
AP said the personnel were traveling aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group. The operational details came from a U.S. official who spoke anonymously because the information concerned sensitive military operations.
| Naval group | Ships named in the AP report | Reported status on October 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group | USS Theodore Roosevelt and cruiser USS Chosin | En route to the Middle East, according to AP |
| USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group | USS Makin Island, USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage | En route to the Middle East, according to AP |
The report described the combined personnel figure as more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. It did not say that all 9,000 were Marines, nor that they were entering Iran as ground troops.
Which U.S. naval forces AP said were already in the region
At the time the story was published, AP said the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington carriers, along with the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group, were already in the Middle East. Those forces were distinct from the two groups AP described as heading there.

AP characterized the regional naval presence as exceeding 20,000 sailors and Marines, with hundreds of aircraft. It also reported that the Navy had last had three carrier strike groups in the Middle East in April; the report excerpt did not specify the year of that April reference.
Three carriers by late October was a possibility, not a confirmed arrival
The unnamed official told AP that the new movement could mean three carriers in the region as early as the end of October. That was a conditional prospect, not confirmation that the carriers had arrived or a firm schedule. The October 1 report establishes what AP said was en route and already present at publication; it does not establish subsequent arrival status.

Why AP placed the movement amid tensions with Iran
AP reported the deployment amid President Donald Trump’s warnings that new strikes against Iran could be possible. The story also said Trump claimed early indications linked Iran to a co-pilot who attacked his captain on an Israel-bound flight. The report excerpt provides no independent corroboration of that allegation, so it should be treated as Trump’s claim rather than an established finding.

- Reported estimate: AP attributed the roughly 9,000-person figure to an unnamed U.S. official, rather than describing it as a public announcement from a named military official.
- Personnel and mission: The report identifies sailors and Marines aboard naval groups. It does not report that the force is a ground deployment into Iran.
- Timing: The two named groups were described as en route on October 1, 2026. The report does not confirm that they later arrived.
- Regional force level: The figures of more than 20,000 sailors and Marines and hundreds of aircraft are AP’s description of the presence at that time, not a current verified count.
