NSW Health is using generative AI to recommend how staff job categories should map to access roles in its Single Digital Patient Record (SDPR). Implementation specialists review every recommendation; the report does not say AI grants permissions or makes the final access decision. NSW Health says the assisted process cut tranche A role-mapping work from roughly 30 days of intensive manual effort to days, an estimated improvement of about 80 percent.
What the AI does in the access-mapping process
As staff join the SDPR, their workforce records include varied job titles and organisational structures. The reported workflow analyses those records and recommends job categories that correspond to SDPR roles. It uses Amazon Bedrock within NSW Health’s AWS tenancy in the Sydney region; Epic Systems supplies the core SDPR technology, hosted in AWS. iTnews reported the workflow on 2 October 2026.
This is administrative role mapping, not a reported clinical decision-making tool. Implementation specialists review each recommendation, and the report says people remain accountable. It does not describe an autonomous system assigning staff permissions.
How much time did AI save?
For tranche A, NSW Health had 6,000 roles to map. Marc Pelusi, associate director of portfolio and AI delivery at the NSW Health SDPR Implementation Authority, told iTnews that the task would have taken roughly 30 days of intensive manual work and was reduced to days with AI assistance—about an 80 percent improvement by the program’s estimate.

Those figures are reported estimates, not independently audited performance results. The report does not publish model accuracy, error or false-assignment rates, bias testing, or audit results, so the time saving alone cannot establish that access decisions became more accurate or safer. Pelusi also cited a workforce of 178,000 people as context for the scale of the program; that is not the number of tranche A roles mapped.
Why role mapping matters for the SDPR
Staff need appropriate access to the information and functions their work requires when a service joins the new record system. As Pelusi put it, “one of the hidden challenges we have is making sure every staff member has the right access to the right parts of SDPR on day one.”

NSW Health describes the SDPR as a statewide integration of electronic medical records (eMR), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and patient administration systems (PAS), intended to bring patient information together across its services. Before integration, NSW Health had 9 eMRs, 10 PAS, and 5 LIMS, according to its SDPR information page for staff and health professionals, current as at 2 October 2026.
Where the rollout stands
The SDPR went live in March 2026 for Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network and the John Hunter Hospital laboratory. In May 2026, it expanded across Hunter New England Local Health District and associated NSW Health Pathology sites. The rollout is phased and is intended to continue across NSW Health services.

Digital NSW’s program case study describes a planned footprint of 228 public hospitals, more than 600 community health centres, 60 pathology laboratories, and more than 150 pathology collection centres, with implementation expected to complete by 2028. Those are program scope figures, not a count of sites already live. NSW Health identifies Epic Systems as the core technology supplier, AWS as the cloud host, and RLDatix Galen as provider of the statewide data archive.

The reported human review aligns with the stated role of people in the workflow, but the available sources do not establish whether this specific system has a publicly available project-level risk assessment or audit, nor do they detail how staff can correct a recommendation. Pelusi summarised the accountability arrangement to iTnews: “So, the AI recommends, and people remain accountable.”
