The Bureau defines Baby Boomers as people born from 1946 through 1964; on July 1, 2025, they were ages 61 to 79. An exact count for that date requires adding the Census resident-population estimates for each of those ages.
Why there is no exact total in the cited Census summaries
The Census Bureau’s April 9, 2026 article describes the changing age and sex structure of the U.S. population, but it does not report a total count of people born from 1946 through 1964. The Bureau’s Vintage 2025 national population estimates provide age-specific data through July 1, 2025; those age cells can be summed to produce a cohort estimate, but the cited article and data landing page do not publish that sum as a headline figure.
That distinction matters: quoting an unsupported approximation as an official Census count would give a false impression of precision. The defensible answer from these published summaries is that the exact cohort total is not stated; the cohort’s size can be calculated from the underlying age estimates.
What counts as a Baby Boomer in 2025?
The Census Bureau uses the birth years 1946 through 1964 for the Baby Boom generation. On July 1, 2025, those birth years corresponded to ages 61 through 79. To estimate how many members remained in the U.S. resident population on that date, add the resident estimates for each single year of age from 61 to 79, inclusive, in the Vintage 2025 file.

This is a cohort count, not a count of everyone considered a senior. The population age 65 and older includes people born before 1946, while excluding Baby Boomers ages 61 through 64. It is therefore not a substitute for the 1946–1964 cohort total.
Why the Baby Boomer population is shrinking
As the cohort gets older, more of its members die, reducing its total size. At the same time, younger age groups—whose growth the Census Bureau says is largely driven by immigration—make up a larger share of the overall population. That growth can reduce the Boomers’ prominence in the population structure even apart from the change in their own count.

The Census Bureau’s April 2026 article also describes a change in the older population’s sex composition. Senior demographer Marc Perry said: “Mortality rates for older men have been decreasing faster than for women and, as a result, men’s share of the older population has increased.” That observation concerns the relative shares of older men and women; it is not a total for surviving Baby Boomers.

The latest completed estimate vintage identified in these sources is Census Vintage 2025, with national single-year age estimates through July 1, 2025. Any cohort total derived from it should be described with that date and vintage, and should specify the resident population series. It should not be presented as a current-day headcount or confused with a year-to-year change in the total U.S. population.

Other figures in the Census Bureau’s 2026 article provide demographic context, not a count of Boomers: the U.S. median age was 39.4 in 2025, compared with 39.2 in 2024; the total fertility rate was 1.63 births per woman in 2024, compared with 3.77 at the Baby Boom peak in 1957. The fertility figures are reported by the National Center for Health Statistics. Neither median age nor fertility rate tells how many members of the 1946–1964 cohort are still alive or resident in the United States.
