It is also a story of how builders learned to work with a material that cracks—and how a structure’s shape, reinforcement and exposure determine what those cracks mean. From early concrete and Roman mortar to modern fracture science, the key is to understand cracking as a process, not simply a line on a surface.
Concrete existed long before Portland cement
A form of concrete was in use as early as 7000 BC, according to the Concrete Society’s history of concrete. The Romans later used concrete in major structures, but they did not invent every form of it. The material’s long history began well before the cement associated with modern construction.
Roman construction is especially revealing because the performance of its mortar cannot be reduced to a single recipe. A peer-reviewed study of Imperial Roman architectural mortar examines its constituents, moisture-permeated fabric and later cementitious reinforcement, while connecting material behavior with architectural form. The lesson is not that Roman concrete was universally superior to modern concrete; it is that material, moisture history and structure worked together.
After the Roman era, development was comparatively limited until engineers began experimenting with cement compositions in the seventeenth century, the Concrete Society recounts. The next major changes would alter both the binder and the way concrete could carry loads.

How modern concrete changed the role of cracking
Modern concrete emerged through successive changes rather than one invention. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) dates the development of Portland cement to the 1820s and steel reinforcement to the mid-1800s. Prestressed concrete appeared in the early twentieth century, and twentieth-century admixtures broadened the range of properties builders could specify.
These changes matter because concrete is not asked to do its work as an isolated block. Binder and aggregate form the material; reinforcement and structural design shape how it carries forces. Cracking therefore has to be understood at more than one scale: a visible crack may be part of a larger pattern of damage, and its significance depends on the structure and the conditions that produced it.

What a concrete fracture actually involves
A concrete fracture is not necessarily a clean split that forms in one instant. ACI fracture-mechanics literature describes a softening process zone at a crack tip: distributed cracking or damage surrounds the continuous crack as the material loses resistance. In other words, the visible line is only part of the story. The evolving damage around it helps explain how a crack can grow and how the material responds.

This view is more useful than treating every crack as either harmless or catastrophic. Cracks can have different causes and implications; their appearance alone does not establish which mechanism is active or whether a structure is safe. ACI’s fracture mechanics report provides the technical framework for understanding cracking and softening at the material scale.
Why concrete cracks: more than one mechanism
Cracking can arise from different material and structural processes. Chemical reactions are one area of continuing investigation: the National Institute of Standards and Technology describes research into unintentional reactions that can cause serious cracking. In pavement, the Federal Highway Administration’s guidance discusses distress mechanisms, including ettringite-related processes.

These sources show why a crack cannot be diagnosed from a photograph or short description alone. The cause, location, pattern, movement over time and structural context all matter. Guidance on pavement distress is also specific to that context; it should not be treated as a universal diagnosis for every concrete element.

The Roman example brings the history’s central idea into focus: durability is an interaction between material and structure. The 2015 PNAS study of Imperial Roman architectural mortar considers moisture-permeated fabric and later cementitious reinforcement alongside the architecture in which the mortar was used.

That evidence supports a specific account of the studied Roman mortar and monuments—not a blanket ranking of Roman concrete against modern mixes. Comparing them responsibly means considering constituents, reinforcement and structural form, moisture and environmental exposure, and what the evidence actually covers.
Crack evaluation comes before repair
Repair is the final stage of a three-part problem: identify the cause, evaluate the crack’s significance, then select an appropriate response. ACI’s report on crack causes, evaluation and repair covers methods and material areas that include resins and grouting. Those categories are not interchangeable fixes: a method must suit the crack’s condition and the structure.
- Evaluate first: establish what may have caused the crack and whether it is changing or affecting structural performance.
- Choose a method for the condition: resin injection or grouting may be relevant to some cracks; surface or overlay approaches address different repair needs.
- Do not assume a product is universal: a consumer epoxy injection kit is a product category, not a substitute for determining whether injection is appropriate or for following safety and application instructions.
ACI’s crack-repair report catalog organizes the subject around causes, evaluation and repair. That order is practical as well as technical: sealing a visible line without understanding why it formed may leave the underlying problem unresolved.
