Both compete in cloud computing, AI and productivity software, but they organize those businesses differently and report on different fiscal calendars. Alphabet’s calendar-year 2025 revenue was $403 billion, while Microsoft reported $281.724 billion for its fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, so those totals are not same-period results.
What is the difference between Alphabet and Microsoft?
Alphabet is a holding company whose largest business is Google. Its reported businesses are Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets. Microsoft is an independent technology company that reports three segments: Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing. The segment names and boundaries differ, so they should not be treated as equivalent categories.
Both companies sell to consumers and organizations, but their business mixes are distinct. Alphabet’s revenues include Google advertising, subscriptions, apps and in-app purchases, devices, enterprise cloud services, and smaller ventures. Microsoft spans productivity software, cloud services and server products, Windows, gaming, and search advertising.
How are Alphabet and Microsoft organized?
Alphabet: Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets
Google Services includes Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Maps, Play and Pixel devices. Alphabet says the segment earns primarily from advertising, subscriptions, apps and in-app purchases, and devices. Google Cloud covers infrastructure, platforms, applications and enterprise services, including Google Cloud Platform and Workspace; revenue comes primarily from consumption-based fees and subscriptions. Other Bets groups smaller operating businesses, including Waymo, Verily, GFiber and GV. Alphabet’s company FAQ describes these businesses and revenue sources; its information is dated September 30, 2025.

Microsoft: three reportable segments
Microsoft’s Productivity and Business Processes segment includes Microsoft 365 and LinkedIn. Intelligent Cloud includes Azure and other cloud services as well as server products. More Personal Computing includes businesses such as Windows, gaming and search advertising. Microsoft’s 2025 annual report details the segment structure and product scope.
This matters when comparing cloud revenue: Alphabet reports Google Cloud as a segment, while Microsoft reports Azure and other cloud services principally within Intelligent Cloud and Microsoft 365 cloud products within Productivity and Business Processes. The two companies’ segment totals therefore do not measure identical product bundles.

How do their reported 2025 revenues compare?

Alphabet’s calendar-year result and Microsoft’s fiscal-year result cover different periods. The totals are useful as company-reported scale indicators, not as a like-for-like comparison of performance during the same twelve months. Google Cloud and Azure both sell cloud infrastructure and services to organizations, but a direct comparison requires matching specific products and workloads rather than comparing segment labels. Google Cloud’s segment includes infrastructure, platforms, applications and enterprise services such as Workspace. Microsoft places Azure and other cloud services in Intelligent Cloud, while Microsoft 365 cloud products sit in Productivity and Business Processes.

- For cloud infrastructure and platforms: compare the specific services, workloads, deployment needs and pricing relevant to a project; the company-level segment figures do not isolate an identical basket.
- For workplace software: compare Google Workspace with Microsoft 365 as productivity offerings, rather than treating all Google Cloud and Intelligent Cloud revenue as office-software revenue.
- For AI: both companies compete in a market that includes hyperscalers, emerging providers and open-source offerings. Microsoft explicitly identifies those competitors for its AI products and Azure in its annual report.
Neither company’s cited company materials constitute an independent assessment of service quality or market share. The appropriate choice depends on workload, product requirements and customer context; the figures here alone do not establish a winner.

Why the comparison needs care
- Different reporting periods: Alphabet’s 2025 is a calendar year; Microsoft fiscal 2025 ended June 30, 2025.
- Different segment boundaries: Alphabet reports Google Cloud separately, while Microsoft’s cloud-related products are distributed across more than one segment.
- Different business mixes: Alphabet’s services include major advertising properties and consumer products; Microsoft also reports Windows, gaming and server products.
- Time-sensitive information: revenue, segment descriptions, product portfolios and competitive conditions can change. The figures above are the cited 2025 results, not a matched 2026 comparison.
