Start by asking what would help them feel heard and valued. That is the practical advice in Jared Wesley and Adam Galovan’s opinion essay in The Tyee, published October 2, 2026: recognize the concern without assuming every grievance is true or that separation is the only answer.
What does “jilted lover” mean in this argument?
Wesley, a University of Alberta political science professor, and Galovan, an associate professor whose work focuses on relationships, use the phrase to describe a longing for recognition: the sense that Alberta wants to matter to Canada, be heard, and be treated as a partner. They argue that disputes over fiscal transfers, pipelines, federal regulation and political representation can carry a second meaning beyond the policy details: “Does Alberta matter to Canada?”
That is the authors’ interpretation, not a description every Albertan accepts. Alberta’s residents do not share one view of Confederation, and a person who raises a concrete policy objection may simply want to discuss that issue. The useful starting point is curiosity, not assuming that every complaint is only a coded plea for belonging.
How to respond when someone feels Alberta is taken for granted
Listen for what the complaint is asking for
Ask what feels unfair or overlooked, then follow up: “What would help you feel heard, valued or included?” A disagreement about a pipeline or federal decision may be about a specific outcome; it may also express frustration about having little influence over decisions. Let the person tell you which it is.

Acknowledge the feeling without pretending to agree
You can say, “I can see why that leaves you feeling dismissed,” without agreeing that Canada has deliberately mistreated Alberta or that every claim is accurate. The distinction matters: taking someone seriously is not the same as endorsing their explanation or proposed remedy.
Ask before bringing in counterarguments
Wesley and Galovan caution against trying to overwhelm someone with facts about equalization, pipelines or federal spending as a first move. Ask whether they want to compare evidence or would rather explain what is bothering them. If the conversation turns to facts, discuss a specific claim and its evidence rather than treating statistics as a substitute for listening.

Keep boundaries around ultimatums
Empathy does not require accepting that separation is inevitable, or agreeing that ordinary political conflict is equivalent to abuse. The essay contrasts its “jilted lover” metaphor with an “abused spouse” frame, arguing that the latter can make departure seem like the only route to safety. These are metaphors, not neutral diagnoses of Alberta’s relationship with Canada. You can recognize real frustration while questioning language that turns political disagreement into a claim that there is no possibility of repair.
Why listening alone cannot resolve the dispute
The relationship analogy can help explain why people care about recognition, but it has limits: provinces are not people, governments are not spouses, and couples counselling cannot settle constitutional authority or fiscal arrangements. A conversation may build understanding; it cannot replace decisions about policy and institutions.

The authors therefore treat emotional recognition and institutional change as complementary, not interchangeable. If people feel excluded from decisions, a response focused only on reassuring words may not address the problem. System-level ways to strengthen Alberta’s voice, agency and sense of partnership matter too. Conversely, a policy adjustment by itself may not resolve a lasting feeling of being disregarded.

The essay also says alienation had declined since the 2025 federal election, particularly among New Democrats, while remaining a defining feature of Alberta politics ahead of a separation referendum it described as expected that month. Those are time-sensitive claims made by the authors in October 2026, not independently verified polling or referendum details in the article.
The practical takeaway is narrower and more durable: when someone says Alberta does not matter, ask what they mean and what would make them feel heard. Take the concern seriously, but do not confuse empathy with agreement or assume that conversation alone can repair a political and institutional problem.
