The magnitude 4.8 earthquake reported near Leongatha, Victoria, at about 2:01 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, was described as shallow—about 10 km deep—and was felt in Melbourne and regional areas. Its reported depth and proximity help explain why it was noticeable, but they cannot establish why any one person experienced it as a sharp jolt. Distance, local geology and topography also affect shaking, sometimes over short distances.
What happened early Saturday?
Same-day reports identified the earthquake as occurring near Leongatha in Victoria shortly after 2 a.m. local time. The Guardian, citing Geoscience Australia, reported a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of about 10 km; SBS also reported the event and said it was felt across Melbourne and regional Victoria. These are reported preliminary parameters, not a confirmed final event record. The Guardian’s report and SBS’s report describe the event and its reach.
The Guardian quoted residents who said they were woken and felt their homes shake. Those accounts convey what some people experienced, but they are anecdotes, not measurements of shaking across the affected area.
Why could it feel like a sudden jolt?
A shallow earthquake can produce noticeable shaking near its source, and the reported event was felt across a broad area. But the event summary does not show what ground motion occurred at an individual home, and depth alone cannot explain one person’s perception. Geoscience Australia identifies magnitude, distance from the earthquake, and local geology and topography as factors shaping felt intensity; the experience can vary considerably between nearby places. Distance from the source
How far a location is from the earthquake affects how strongly it may be felt. The broad reports—from Melbourne to regional Victoria—do not provide enough detail to determine the shaking at any specific address.
Ground and terrain at the location
Local geology and topography can alter shaking, even across short distances. The available reports do not include measurements from individual homes or soil comparisons, so they cannot identify a particular local cause for a sharp sensation.

What “sharp” tells us—and what it does not
“Sharp” describes a person’s perception, not a measured seismic parameter. The available sources do not establish a single reason that everyone felt a sudden jolt, nor do they identify which seismic wave caused any individual person’s experience.

Victoria’s State Emergency Service advice, reported by SBS, is to “drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture and protect your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops.” Follow current instructions from local emergency services for your location. SBS’s report attributes this advice to the service.
