But it also brings reporting, governance and public-market demands—and private equity, private credit and strategic investors can finance growth without a listing. The right choice depends on the company’s strategy, readiness and need for capital, not on an assumption that ambitious businesses must go public.
What a flotation can offer
An initial public offering (IPO) sells shares to public-market investors and can put a company’s shares on a stock exchange. For a business with substantial financing needs and the capabilities to operate as a public company, a listing can provide several kinds of value:
- Access to capital: A flotation may fund expansion, investment or an acquisition strategy, and public markets may provide a route to raise capital again later.
- Visibility: A public profile can raise a company’s visibility with investors, customers and potential business partners.
- Shareholder liquidity: A quoted share price gives shareholders a market in which they may be able to sell shares, subject to demand and trading conditions.
- Shares for acquisitions: Publicly traded shares may be used as part of the consideration in acquisitions.
These are potential advantages, not guarantees. A listing does not by itself ensure continued access to capital, a higher valuation or an active market in the shares.
What a company takes on by going public
Public-market funding comes with a continuing obligation to meet regulatory and reporting requirements, maintain governance and communicate with shareholders. Results and business decisions also face greater public scrutiny. Management must spend time serving the needs of public investors as well as running the company.

There is a further distinction between being listed and having liquid shares. Smaller listed companies may find it difficult to attract analyst coverage, institutional investors and enough trading activity. If shareholders cannot readily find buyers, the listing may offer less practical liquidity than they expected.
The Irish Examiner’s 2 October 2026 report quotes Stephen Kane, head of corporate advisory at Goodbody, saying a listing can support visibility and acquisition-led growth “provided management is prepared for the increased governance and reporting requirements.”

Private funding can keep the company private
An IPO is one route to finance growth, not a prerequisite for it. Private equity, private credit and strategic investors are alternatives identified by the Irish Examiner. They can provide funding while a company remains privately held; the terms, control implications and suitability depend on the specific investor and transaction.
Tom Noonan, director of corporate finance at PwC Ireland, told the Irish Examiner that the availability of private equity, private credit and other institutional capital means companies can remain private longer while still accessing substantial funding. He also said the traditional case that ambitious companies need public markets to finance growth has weakened.

Private funding does not make the trade-offs disappear. A company still needs to assess how much capital it requires, what influence or economic interest an investor expects, and whether the funding fits its plans. The available information does not establish a general cost or return advantage for either private funding or an IPO.
How to decide whether your company is ready
Readiness is specific to the company and its objectives. The advisers quoted in the Irish Examiner emphasize scale, significant financing needs, strong management, predictable financial performance, a clear growth strategy, governance and sufficient liquidity. Use those factors to test whether a public listing fits the business—not simply whether it is possible.

- Scale and capital need: Has the business reached sufficient scale, and does its next stage require significant capital that public markets can help provide?
- Management and performance: Can the leadership team meet investor expectations, and are financial performance and prospects clear enough for the company to explain credibly?
- Strategy: Is there a defined use for the capital and a growth plan that can be communicated to public investors?
- Governance and reporting: Is the company prepared to maintain the governance and reporting standards expected of a listed business?
- Liquidity prospects: Is there a plausible investor base and enough market interest to support meaningful trading in the shares?
- Shareholder goals: Do existing shareholders want an opportunity for liquidity, and are they prepared for the realities of a public market?
Tom Noonan’s view, as reported by the Irish Examiner, is that a flotation makes most sense when a company has sufficient scale and needs significant capital for its next growth stage. Stephen Kane stresses that the decision should be driven by strategy rather than funding alone: public-market visibility and capital access should support the company’s long-term objectives.

| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Capital and follow-on access | How much funding is needed now, and what credible options exist for financing later growth? |
| Scale and readiness | Is the company large and prepared enough for public investors, or better suited to a private transaction? |
| Control and shareholder liquidity | What dilution or influence would the proposed funding involve, and how important is a route for existing shareholders to sell? |
| Ongoing obligations | Can the business absorb the continuing reporting, governance and public-communication demands of a listing? |
| Investor access and trading | Is there likely to be sufficient investor interest and trading activity for public shares to be useful in practice? |
| Strategic fit and time horizon | Which route best supports the company’s long-term objectives and the timing of its plans? |
The Irish Examiner’s reporting offers examples of flotations, not a like-for-like comparison of financing routes. It attributes a US$1.77 trillion valuation and US$75 billion raised to SpaceX’s reported Nasdaq debut in 2026. It also describes an expected Anthropic flotation at an anticipated US$2 trillion valuation and US$100 billion raise; those figures were expectations in the report, not confirmation that a flotation occurred. In Ireland, it reports that GDL Management Group floated at an initial share price of €134.50 and had a market value of €134.5 million at the end of August. These company-specific figures do not establish what another business could raise or what its listing would be worth.
Why Irish context matters
The Irish Examiner’s report focuses on Ireland and Euronext Dublin while also discussing US examples. Its market figures should be understood as figures reported by that article, not as a general forecast for Irish companies. Its statement about Irish REIT rules is not independently confirmed here, so it should not be relied on as legal guidance. Companies considering a listing need advice specific to their structure, jurisdiction and proposed market.
The report and its quoted remarks are available from the Irish Examiner, “A powerful platform for growth, but not the only one,” 2 October 2026.
