Peter Dench’s 2026 feature in Amateur Photographer describes a volume of around 100 black-and-white photographs and more than 20 colour images, nearly half of them previously unpublished or unexhibited. Alongside familiar pictures, it presents less-seen scenes of Vietnamese civilians and ordinary life disrupted by war.
What is in Don McCullin’s Vietnam?
The book spans three periods of McCullin’s Vietnam War work: 1965–67, 1968 and 1972. Dench reports that it contains around 100 black-and-white photographs and more than 20 colour images. His feature describes nearly half of the photographs as having been neither published nor exhibited before; that is the feature’s account of the book, not an independently audited history of every image.
The selection includes well-known work, among it photographs of a shell-shocked US Marine and the Battle of Hue, but it is not presented simply as a greatest-hits collection. Dench’s reading is that the less familiar images broaden the view: they draw attention to Vietnamese civilians, everyday life interrupted by fighting, and the vulnerability and dignity of people caught in the conflict.
Why the archive material matters
Photographs sit alongside personal notes, contact sheets, press clippings, identification cards and other ephemera. The captions draw on conversations McCullin recorded in 2026 with GOST Books director Stuart Smith. Together, these materials offer context for how pictures were made, circulated, selected and remembered, rather than leaving the photographs to stand as a detached sequence.

Dench reports that McCullin returned to his home archive in Somerset to review the work. In describing a prior visit, Dench puts the archive at around 60,000 negatives and 10,000 prints, and reports that McCullin shot around 30 rolls of film on each Vietnam trip. Those are figures from Dench’s reporting and personal account, not numbers established by an independently audited archive catalogue.
McCullin’s words on the Battle of Hue
The Citadel fighting during the Tet Offensive is a major part of the book’s historical and personal frame. A sentence attributed to McCullin’s writing in the book captures the experience in compressed form: “I thought I had the stomach for the Tet Offensive. But during 11 days inside the Citadel, I beheld all the ways that men live and die in war.”

Dench also reports McCullin reflecting on a wounded North Vietnamese soldier during a gallery discussion: “Maybe this boy has honoured himself, it’s his country he’s fighting for.” The same feature quotes McCullin saying, “Some of the soldiers had compassion.” The remarks complicate a simple division between sides by bringing the human judgment of individual soldiers into view.
What the photographs can—and cannot—do
McCullin’s work is evidence of what happened, but he has also expressed doubt that photographs can change the course of war. The feature attributes this reflection to him: “All the great images – then and even now – do not make any difference. They are proof of what happens in war, but they are like Christmas cards: they come every year.”

That tension helps explain the value of revisiting an archive. The photographs cannot undo the events they record; a broader selection can, however, change what viewers notice. Dench argues that placing familiar images beside less familiar civilian scenes shifts attention toward the lives and vulnerability of people often obscured by the most iconic battlefield pictures.
