Why Sir Richard Hadlee Is Criticizing NZ Cricket Over Transparency

Former New Zealand cricketer and former New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Board member Sir Richard Hadlee has criticized the Board’s handling of significant decisions, pointing to a confidential Deloitte review of domestic T20 cricket. He wants the review and its supporting management recommendations shared with key stakeholders, and has called for the current Board to step aside and reapply through an independent appointment process. NZC chief executive Geoff Allott says he explained the review’s confidential nature and agreed to improve communication and engagement.

What prompted Hadlee’s criticism?

In a report published October 2, 2026, Hadlee said he was disappointed by what he sees as a lack of transparency around major Board decisions. He identified a Deloitte review concerning the future of domestic T20 cricket as his main example.

Hadlee said he had contributed to consultation and expected participants to receive the report. The coverage says he also told the outlet that Major Associations (MAs) and District Associations (DAs) had not seen it. These are reported accounts of Hadlee’s expectations and what he said stakeholders had received; the consultation records themselves are not available in the coverage.

Hadlee summarized his concern this way: “Transparency builds trust. A lack of transparency creates uncertainty, misinformation, speculation and mistrust.” That is his assessment of the consequences, not an independently established finding about NZC.

What does Hadlee want NZC to do?

Share the review with stakeholders

Hadlee called for “the release of the Deloitte report and the supporting management recommendations to key stakeholders, including MAs, DAs and Life Members.” The contents and conclusions of the Deloitte report have not been disclosed in the accessible coverage, so they cannot establish what changes it recommends for domestic T20 cricket.

Change how the Board is appointed

Hadlee also said the current Board should step aside and reapply through what he described as a genuinely independent appointment process, rather than one run by the MAs. This is Hadlee’s proposal; the report does not say that NZC or the Board has accepted it.

How has NZ Cricket responded?

Allott said he explained the confidential nature of the Deloitte process and listened to Hadlee’s concerns. He also said he had agreed to increase communication and engagement moving forward. The report describes their meeting as open and honest, while noting that the two men did not agree on everything.

Allott’s reported response addresses communication but does not indicate that NZC will release the report or adopt Hadlee’s proposed Board appointment process. The accessible coverage includes no formal Board statement setting out a decision on either request.
