Dual’s CS 629Q pairs full automatic operation with direct drive, but it is still a preview, not a production turntable whose performance has been independently tested. The combination is not new: Dual’s CS 701 offered both features in 1973. What is unusual is Dual’s plan to introduce a new model in the category, and whether its design can deliver reliable convenience without compromising playback remains unanswered.
What the CS 629Q is—and what it is not
Dual describes the CS 629Q as a fully automatic turntable with a newly developed direct-drive system. Fully automatic operation means the turntable handles the start of playback and the tonearm’s return at the end; it is more than an automatic lift that raises the arm after a record finishes.
Dual’s official page labels the model Preview 2027. Its description calls the deck a premium, fully automatic direct-drive turntable and presents “outstanding precision” and “audiophile sound” as design aims. Those are manufacturer claims, not verified results from a released product.
Dual calls it “the world’s first newly introduced fully automatic direct-drive turntable of the 21st century.” The qualifiers matter: the claim concerns a newly introduced model in this century, not the first such turntable ever made. Dual’s own history includes the CS 701, a fully automatic direct-drive model from 1973.

Why full automation raises a design question
Automatic mechanisms need moving parts and linkages to start the arm and return it. Fitting those parts around the tonearm, platter and motor can make packaging, adjustment, tracking and servicing more challenging. Their proximity to the arm and platter also raises a reasonable question about vibration and resonance.
That is a design concern, not proof that every automatic turntable sounds worse. The available reporting does not describe a controlled comparison that keeps the arm, platter, cartridge, plinth and setup the same while bypassing the automatic mechanism. Listening comparisons between different models cannot isolate the mechanism’s effect from all their other differences.

One alternative engineering approach appears in Pro-Ject’s Automat A2: reporting describes a floating sub-chassis carrying the tonearm, platter bearing and motor. Pro-Ject presents that arrangement as a way to address resonance. It is a design explanation, not independent evidence that the A2—or any particular automatic deck—outperforms another.
What the preliminary specifications say
Headphonesty reports figures from a draft CS 629Q manual. They describe the proposed design, not independent measurements of a released production unit.

The same reporting gives Dual’s stated wow-and-flutter figures for two other models: below ±0.05% for the manual CS 718Q and below ±0.08% for the automatic, belt-driven CS 529. These are manufacturer figures cited in reporting, not a like-for-like independent test of the three turntables. A lower published number alone does not establish what a listener will hear.
How it differs from other turntables
Automation and drive type are separate choices. A turntable may be automatic but belt-driven, or direct-drive but manual. Automatic arm lift is also distinct from full automation: lift raises the arm at the end of a record, while full automation additionally handles playback start and arm return.

The CS 629Q’s reported 5–9 g cartridge range is not enough on its own to determine which cartridges will pair well with the arm. The draft figures do not include effective arm mass, a key part of evaluating cartridge and arm resonance.

The 53-year framing counts from the 1973 Dual CS 701 to 2026. It does not mean the engineering combination disappeared or that nobody made another fully automatic direct-drive turntable in the intervening decades. Headphonesty also points to the Technics SL-1300 from 1974 and notes that older models from multiple brands combined direct drive with full automation.

Read the headline as a revival of a category in new product announcements, not the invention of a new format. Dual’s wording is narrower: a newly introduced fully automatic direct-drive model in the 21st century.
When it may be available, and what it may cost
Dual’s page identifies the CS 629Q as a 2027 preview and does not provide a final retail specification sheet. StereoNET reported on June 8, 2026, that worldwide availability was expected from mid-2027 and preorders were planned for the first quarter of 2027. Headphonesty later reported an expected price around €1,800, while noting that Dual had not listed a price. These are reported plans and an estimate, not confirmed launch details or final pricing. The cited material does not establish a US price or exact shipping date.
What buyers should watch for
Until a production model and final specifications are available, the CS 629Q is best understood as a promising design proposal rather than proof that automation has no playback trade-offs. When evaluating it against manual or semi-automatic alternatives, look for:
- Whether the production model retains the draft specifications, including the stated speed-stability figure and cartridge range.
- Independent measurements and listening tests on retail hardware, rather than comparisons based only on different models’ published specifications.
- Details about the arm’s effective mass, isolation approach and serviceability.
- Confirmed regional pricing, availability and final product documentation.
For listeners who value automatic start and arm return, convenience is a real part of the design brief. In a 2011 AudioKarma comment quoted by Headphonesty, one owner put that preference plainly: “Personally, I would never go back to a manual table. The auto features outweigh everything else.” It is one person’s view, not a measure of what all listeners prefer.
