In Kigonze, outside Bunia in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a displacement camp housing a transit center for people infected with Ebola was reportedly burned while soldiers searched for weapons, according to an account by a senior UN official reported by The Associated Press (AP). AP said 19,000 people fled the camp. The incident was reported as the DRC’s current Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak passed 4,000 reported deaths.
What happened in Kigonze?
AP reported on October 2, 2026, that soldiers burned a displacement camp in Kigonze, on the outskirts of Bunia, while searching for weapons. The account came from a senior UN official, as reported by AP; the report does not identify individual soldiers or establish a motive beyond the reported weapons search.
The camp housed a transit center for infected patients. That description is more specific than calling it a conventional inpatient Ebola treatment center: AP’s headline used “treatment center,” but its article body described a camp that included a transit center. AP said the fire forced 19,000 camp residents to flee.
How many people have died in the DRC outbreak?
AP said the latest figures released by the DRC Health Ministry on Thursday before its October 2 report recorded 4,018 deaths among 8,300 cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15, 2026. These are ministry figures reported by AP as of that update, not a live count for October 3 or a later date.

Which Ebola virus is causing this outbreak?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies the 2026 DRC outbreak as Bundibugyo virus disease. Its situation page, updated October 1, 2026, said the risk to the American public and travelers remained low. The CDC’s response description covers support for surveillance, diagnostic laboratories, infection prevention and control, and outbreak containment.
Bundibugyo virus disease should not be conflated with other Ebola virus diseases or with earlier DRC outbreaks. In particular, vaccine or treatment information specific to another Ebola virus species should not automatically be applied to this outbreak.

What does losing the transit center mean?
UN senior Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis told AP: “When we lose a center, that means we lose capacity, we lose investment, and we have to start again.” His remark describes the general consequences of losing a response facility. AP did not quantify the Kigonze site’s clinical capacity or estimate how much response capacity was lost in this specific fire.
MSF coordinator in Butembo Stephanie Hoffman described the outbreak’s spread to AP this way: “It is like fighting a wildfire.” She added: “Multiple outbreaks are developing at the same time, with varying intensity and in different locations.”

How is this different from the 2018–2019 DRC outbreak?
The 2019 figures and attacks below concern a separate Ebola outbreak in a different period; they do not verify the 2026 Kigonze fire.
