What does the “increase by half” claim refer to?
The headline’s original report or dataset could not be identified. Without it, there is no way to establish what population it covers, where the estimate applies, which years are being compared, or whether “demand” means requests for family help, the number of people needing care, or unmet care needs. The 50% figure should therefore be treated as an unverified headline claim, not a confirmed forecast.
What a 2026 U.S. study projects instead
Freedman and co-authors’ study, published online on June 1, 2026, in Population Research and Policy Review, models late-life care gaps among U.S. adults aged 65 and older through 2040. Using estimates from the National Health and Aging Trends Study and projections of kinship patterns, it distinguishes two outcomes that are related but not interchangeable: older adults with care needs but no family caregiver, and older adults with unmet care needs, whether or not they have a family caregiver. Alternative population projection, with population growth alone
In the study’s alternative population projection, which includes foreign-born people and racial and ethnic groups beyond the main White and Black population, population growth alone produces these modeled estimates for 2040:

These are model projections, not observed future counts, and they describe care gaps rather than the total amount of family care people will need or provide.
When population aging is included
In projections combining population growth with aging, the modeled increase from 2022 is 32.5% for older adults with care needs but no family caregiver, and 33.9% for older adults with unmet care needs. Those are still distinct outcomes; neither is an estimate of a 50% increase in total family-care demand.

Why the definition of care need matters
The study’s findings depend on how care need is defined. A broader sensitivity definition yielded a substantially larger projected number of older adults with care needs but no family caregiver. That makes it especially important to identify the measure and population behind any headline percentage before comparing it with these estimates.
The authors also report that projected shifts in family structure and family size did not appreciably raise the two estimates beyond population growth alone. In their model, population growth—and, when included, an older age profile—account for the reported increases in these care gaps.

What the projections mean for families and policy
A larger projected care gap points to a risk that some older adults may lack family help or have needs that remain unmet. It does not, by itself, predict how many relatives will become caregivers, how many hours of care they will provide, or how much paid care will be required.
The study discusses enhanced supportive services, caregiver training, more flexibility for employed caregivers and better integration with healthcare as possible ways to strengthen family care. These are proposed directions, not interventions evaluated by the projection model, so the study does not establish how effective they would be.

How to read a “family care demand” forecast
Before relying on a percentage such as 50%, check whether the source specifies:
- the country or region and the population included;
- the baseline year and forecast year;
- whether it counts people needing help, family caregivers, care hours, unmet need, or people without a family caregiver;
- which assumptions change—population size, age structure, family size or family availability; and
- whether the number is a modeled projection or an observed count.
Those details determine what a forecast actually says. The 2026 study is useful evidence about projected U.S. late-life care gaps, but it cannot confirm an undefined forecast that family-care demand will rise by half.
